Trying to hide from fellow GMs from a league...do you see Pominville producing similar numbers in the future? 30 goals 40 assists?

Hey, nyihater4life, thanks for the question. Yeah, absolutely, I see Pommer as a solid 65 point player with the ability to sniff 75 on a good year. Range-wise from here on out I would put him at 67-72 (assuming a full/healthy season).

I don't care for him in the captaincy, personally, but he is a stand-up player, possessing above average offensive skill-set. And his place on the team's line hierarchy is as secure as anyone's - given it's a Lindy Ruff coached team.

Tgraveline, thanks for the question. Well...lol...that's still somewhat subjective. Pegula's penny pinching would be perceived as an acid-induced, bi-polar manic shopping spree by former owner Tom Galisano's standards.

But yes, I believe Regier is being more calculating with regard to position/players targeted. As for the money, well, he has said he will do whatever it takes if it involves a player who they believe will take them to their ultimate goal - The Cup.

Regier has been interviewed extensively this week, leading up to tonight's draft. His plan is to remain as fluid as possible with regard to overall draft strategy (which also includes trades to move up-or-down), while always maintaining focus on the team's ultimate objective. In other words, employ purposeful tactics (trading, drafting) that are in concert with a general strategy (ability to roll three lines, improve strength down the middle) in order to achieve the ultimate goal (duh...The Cup)

Sun Tzu would be proud.

Other GMs piss and moan about Regier overvaluing his prospects. Perhaps, but one needs to understand why. And that can be summed up in two
words - Development Curve.

Regier places a higher-than norm value on all prospects (not only his) because he believes with today's technological advances in training, diet, and strength and conditioning prospects can make the jump to the NHL sooner rather than later.

Consequently, at this point in time he is not apt to purge valuable assets for a potential rental player (see: Jordon Staal), nor will he unload to move into the top three.

To swing a deal with the Oilers for the #1 overall, Myers would have to be involved, and that is not happening. And while he recognizes his team is in need of a big first line center, he's not inclined to move to the 4,5, or 6 spots. Not when one NHL mock has Grigorenko going at the 14 spot (News flash: he ain't making it past #12). Also, keep in mind, Grigorenko is a #2 center (ostensibly). The Sabres already made that move when they acquired Hodgeson, a player I still believe will turn out to be great value (once Ruff is gone...[ahem]...). Ennis is the third line center, and man lemme tell ya when a team can have a third line center like Ennis, a kid that can split the seam on an outlet pass like it's no one's business. Well, let's just say he's key at that position.

Point, again, being, why lose assets to move up to grab a #2 center when the team already has that as well as a damn good #3??

In fact Regier believes there will be more movement tonight during the draft then there will be in the hours leading up to it. He sees a lot of uncertainty with the top 30, and believes owners will be more inclined to leap frog one another once the draft is under way and things start to sort themselves out.

As evidence, Regier was today offered a package for the Sabres 21st overall and he refused. With four picks in the the first two rounds, and the anticipation of a lot of action during the draft, why act premature? After all, none of the nine players he has targeted will make an impact this year (his words) so why rush into anything when he's the one holding a very desirable set of assets.

He's even admitted that in order to obtain the top center his team so desperately desires, he will have to do so via a trade. I very much like the idea of Regier playing his cards tight to his vest and using those four picks to the best of his advantage. In fact....trading up into the first by dealing his two second rounders would be a sick move (assuming there is a player there he has had targeted). Three firsts? Awesome play.

Utilizing his picks to stock the prospect cabinets would provide Regier with much more sure footing going into free agency. I believe he would be more confident owning the players as opposed to abstract picks, and this would allow hiim to deal from a position of strength.

We shall see, but one thing is certain...things are getting very interesting for this Sabres fan.

Thanks for the quick response. Much appreciated. I see he has up and down seasons, but I hope he finally stays consistent and keeps racking up huge numbers.

I'm drunk...lol...but that was some awesome display of patience by Regier, imo.

GMs over reaching for d-men, Regier sits tight. Could not believe Forsberg AND Grigorenko were both sittin' there at 11, 12. F-in Grigs just falls into Regier's lap, while all those arm chair GMs told him to trade up to get him.

Gotta f-in love AM sports radio.

Then Regier goes and trades with Calgary...again...(they were kind enough to give the Sabres their second rounder) to move up into their 1st round slot to take another sweet center, Zemgus Girgensons. Then Calgary drops to Buffalo's 21 spot to overreach for a center, Mark Jankowski.

Beautiful.

While the league is overreaching for d-men (w/the exceptions of Yakupov and Galchenyuk) Regier comes in a snags two top centers (w/out overreaching). Consequently, the rest of the league then starts trying to pick up centers.

BTW...major congrats to the Penguins. Totally won the round this eve, though Regier was close second just by standing pat.

Telling someone a few months ago Grigorenko would go that late would get you a smack in the face.

And I believe that second 1st rounder was from the Gaustad trade. That's going to look great in a few years.
