My team is at a crossroads. I won the pool last year, but this year pulled some Milburyesque trades and ended up 8th. Here’s my question: do I make another run at the championship next year, or do I blow the team up and rebuild?

It’s a big, deep league: 15 teams of 22 players. We get to keep 10-12 players (it’s up for review this summer) or less. Oh, and we’ve got a salary cap of 150% of the actual NHL cap for that year.

Here are my 6 core keepers:
Spezza, Datsyuk, Radulov, Redden, Meszaros, Kari Lehtonen.

Scenario 1: I load up for another championship and keep most or all of these guys: Souray, Zubov, Gionta, Nagy. Then I try to draft established players to fill in the holes, even though I’m running into cap trouble already.

Scenario 2: I start rebuilding and keep the following: B Richards, Penner, Kessel, C Armstrong (token Penguin). Then I focus on cheap young prospects and room under the cap (I’ll have extra picks at the end if I keep less than the 10-12 we’re allowed).

With such a deep pool, and a salary cap, I doubt I’d be able to grab a superstar but I could find some dependable role players. Or, I dismantle the team and try for contention in a couple of years.

ditto... your current core of 6 keepers are young enough that the oldest will be in his early 30\'s by the time your team is rebuilt. You\'ll have young guys that are coming into their own, and some of the best vets (at that point) in the leauge...

Yeah, I would also choose the rebuild way with the core player you already have. You can\'t go wrong with these guys.

I like scenario #2: I like Richards. To a lesser degree I like Penner. I like him a lot though.
