With the release of the Top 100 Roto Players, a Mail Bag had to follow.
I'd like the PG Mail bag to focus on Active Roto Skaters, leaving the goalie related questions to GG and everything else to Angus. This will also serve as an ongoing Mail bag. Questions may not get answered right away (depending on schedules) but rest assured, they will all get a reply. Same general rules apply - quick questions only (no audits! Save those for another day haha) If you are referring to the guide and want to ask a specific question in terms of the rankings, make sure you indicate which list you are looking at (GMG and/or Praba). Fire away!

Thanks for all you're hard work...the Roto Guide looks great!
for the remainder of the season would you take Fisher, Vermette or Cole? (scoring cats are in sig.)

Unless Carolina acquires a top RW (or ships out Cole to a contender), he is riding shotgun to Staal for the rest of the season. Cole so far has 35 P, 7 PPP, 1 SHG and a very impressive 7 GWG. Using your scoring system, that's a total of 51 Points*. Expect another 13 Points, 3 PPP, 1 SHG and 3 more GWG to finish the season (or 21 points* total). In a Keeper league I'd go with Vermette, but I really like Cole's situation right now. Fisher is also intriguing because he basically becomes the go to forward on Nashville, meaning he could be worth the gamble. Although, if you want to play it safe, go with Cole. GMG

I'll be available most of the day to answer any roto mailbag questions.
Switching between writing tomorrow's article (Top 15 G/SOG Combo Players) and doing some trading in my Dynasty leagues. Let's hear them!

Hey roto guru...err i mean Gates!
I know this depends on other managers, their values etc if trying to make a deal, but in general to compare, how do you evaluate someone who's strong in points but less strength elsewhere, vs someone who's more balanced across the board generally but less offensively gifted? This is probably something most roto managers find challenging. If you want an example of two players with different values, these two are on my squad (see signature), so could you compare Eriksson to Brown, given the categories? By Yahoo, Brown is ranked 39 and Eriksson is 51. Thanks in advance. |

I seriously lol'd at your opening statement, classic!
I'll start off by saying this is a fantastic question and glad it was brought up. When your making a deal, the first two stats managers will look at is goals and assists - they are the most attractive. From there anything else (peripheral categories) is simply bonus, but it shouldn't be that way. For instance, while I'm compiling the list of top 15 G/SOG players, I'm faced with the challenge of weighing both categories equally - because in roto every single category has the same pull. So what's worth more? D. Sedin with 45G and 275 SOG or Carter with 35G and 350 SOG? Value wise D. Sedin takes it every single time, but truth is, Carter might in fact be the better roto choice. Mind you, another argument can be made against D. Sedin's LW vs. Carter's C/RW but that's a different angle. When a manager deals with the vision of points only first, it often leads them to do sideways deals and doesn't necessarily benefit their team. For example, in a deep league, I recently acquired Theo Peckham. He only has 11 points, but has an amazing 134 PIM, 161 HIT and 105 Blocked Shots, in addition he only makes .550M. Quietly, he ranks 48th D-man in that league (Standard Yahoo! Cats + Hits and BS, much like yours). Would I trade the likes of Erik Johnson (ranked 64th), Tyler Myers (77th) or Victor Hedman (96th) for Peckham? Heck no, but it just goes to show you that peripherals add that extra hidden value to a given player (and lowers others). Now you ask to compare Eriksson and Brown? Hands down Brown. So far... Brown - 20G, 21A, plus-18, 55 PIM, 151 SOG, 11 PPP, 0 SHP, 217 HIT, 23 BS Eriksson - 19 G, 36 A, plus-11, 6 PIM, 127 SOG, 18 PPP, 2 SHP, 17 HIT, 33 BS Look at the difference in PIMs and HITs, it's no competition. Sure Eriksson will get you more points and Specialty Team points but given the peripherals, Brown is simply that much better. In terms of Yahoo Rank, Brown should be top 25 and Eriksson top 75. Now that's not to bang on Eriksson because in your situation he complements Brown. (If you add both together you'd get : 39 G, 57 A, plus-29, 61 PIM, 278 SOG, 29 PPP, 2 SHP, 234 HIT, 56 BS.) But one for one, you have to go with Brown. ~~ Hope that answers your question! I could write about this topic all day haha. GMG Quote:

Any thoughts on David Jones in the years to come? He's a good goal scorer, lays the body and blocks a lot of shots for a forward. Are the injuries enough to turn you away completely or is he a viable keeper option in leagues with a lot of categories?

Based on his current pace, I do think he can be a consistent 30G, 20A, even plus/minus, 40 PIM, 175 SOG, 100 HIT & 50 BS player - which is perfect for a depth position on any roster. With Stewart out of town, Jones has now become (arguably) the top RW for the Avalanche which definitely gives some added value. I'm sure Praba could add to this as he own Jones in two of our 30 team Dynasty Leagues.
