Jones is a perfect example of low risk-high reward. The chances of him playing a full season are slim, but when he plays, more often than not he'll produce.

If the last Avalanche game is any indication of how things will be in the post-stewart era, Jones could be a good third RW for your team. The top PP consisted of Stastny, Hejduk, Jones, Liles, EJ. For the rest of the year I would say it is safe to assume his power play points should increase, as well as peripheral stats (more ice time means more chances to take penalties, shots on goal, hits, blocks etc).

If you can get him for cheap, then do so. If the Avs dont bring in another forward by the deadline, jones could be seeing top 6 minutes for the rest of the season (which then could be a perfect oppurtunity to sell high on him).

As long as you dont treat him like your 1st or 2nd RW, you wont be dissapointed.

Thanks very much GMG for the helpful, detailed response. I'm in agreement with you, as in my roto experience I am learning more about the value of players with strengths in multiple categories, over purely one/two dimensional ones.

That being said, as I expected you to say Brown, I have a follow up question to probe a bit further. How many more points would Eriksson have to get to become about 'equal' value to Brown? Or if you want to analyse it more generally, how do you evaluate the gap between categories to determine what equates to one another?

I know this is not an exact science, but perhaps in your experience you've been able to understand this a bit more. Thanks again.

Good question and it all depends at the categories in play. I mean if you look at my list of Top 100 Roto (G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, SOG) you'll see that Eriksson (30) and Brown (32) are two spots from each other, favoring Eriksson. Meaning they are already equal when faced with those six categories.

Although, the moment you add Hits to equation (as of February 21st : Brown 217, Eriksson 17), the advantage has to go to Brown and by a lot.

This is where the tier system comes into play. If you have a player like Eriksson who is strong in Goals (Tier 3) but weak in PIMs (Tier 1) it generally equals a player like Brown who is steady in Goals (Tier 2) and steady in PIMs (Tier 2) - always based on team needs of course.

In addition, players (Brown) who are Monsters (Tier 4) in a given category (Hits) can basically lead your team to win that respective category each week (H2H) or boost you up to top ranks in that particular category (Roto).

Although don't over value lopsided Monsters ala Joe Thornton. See Thornton is a Monster in the Assist category but is weak in G, +/-, PIM and SOG. Meaning a player like Brown, who is steady across the board, is technically the better player to own - and that's without bringing in positional requirements into play.

Awesome - thanks again GMG. Yep, Brown was one of the guys I had targeted at the start of the season when I was pre-ranking for my autodraft. I think we even had discussions about it. Even when he's slumped offensively, he has never left my starting lineup due to his value in other categories, especially being a stud in hits. Looking at the opposite, I'm totally with you regarding some of the overrated roto players e.g. Thornton, H. Sedin, even Eriksson. Fortunately I have good RW balance (Brown, Doan especially) so that Eriksson's limitations haven't hurt me too much.

Hey guys, I'm trying to grab an extra goalie for the playoffs and coming seasons and was offered

His Vokoun and Grabner

for

My Pietrangelo, Perreault, B MacLean, MDZ and 1st rd pick.

What do you think about this offer, I hate to give up so much youth but in a 14 team multicat league, goalies are invaluable

Hey Killer, do you mind posting your roster, as well letting me know around what position your 1st round pick will be for the draft? Pietrangelo is the one piece i would be very hesitant about giving up.

Not only do I agree with you about Pietrangelo but I've already decided that he isn't going anywhere

Thanks!!
