Quick hits:
Bozak was 22-4 on the draw last night. Holy Mackinaw. Very disappointed in Grabbo, Kulie and MacArthur so far this season. 2/3 of that line should already be in mid-season form and they are getting outplayed by Bozak's line. Although a small sample size so far, McClement needs to improve - a so called shutdown centreman who is winning 40% of his faceoffs. Having said that, I'm quite fond of the 87% penalty kill rate so far. Keep that up boys. Scrivens has not really been tested much in the first two games. So kudos to everyone, especially the coaches, on the improved defensive structure in front of the goalies. I said multiple times last year that their poor defensive play (and too many turnovers) was a larger problem than the goaltending. They better win this year. Because I found both the Montreal and Buffalo games to be pretty boring. Maybe part of that is sloppy play and lack of chemistry from no exhibition games. But I think a larger part is Carlyle's influence on the playing style. If they win, I will live with it. But if they continue to be a loser, I will miss Ronny Wilson who had them playing an exciting and entertaining brand of hockey. Kostka looked strong in Montreal but pretty ordinary against Buffalo. I thought Fraser and Holzer didn't do enough to justify staying in the lineup. Komo and Franson played better. When Gardiner is healthy, I would have to assume Fraser and Holzer get sent down with Franson or Kostka as the press box d-man. JVR is struggling to get comfortable, although that line as a whole (with Kadri and Komarov) has had some good moments. Still waiting to see more of the "pest" Komarov. I feel sorry for Reimer - he's been benched because of rust, and will probably get his first opportunity of the season tomorrow. And, frankly, I fully expect him to get lit up by the powerful Pens. If I'm coaching, I might stick with Scrivens (who's played dozens of games already this season) for one more start rather than risk Reimer's early confidence in a potential, and likely, blow out situation. Is JVR going to start putting up points? Does he look brutal? I suppose he's a pretty streaky guy.

He hasn't looked brutal, but hasnt looked great either. I'd give him a 6/10 so far in his two games but I do think playing with Grabovski and Kulemin will help him.

Man what a tilt last night between Orr and Engelland. Here's a pic of the damage to Engelland's face.

Frattin has been called up to replace injured Lupul. Any guesses where Frattin fits in the lineup?

Agreed. JVR clicked nicely Grabovski and Kulemin so I dont think they break them up. MacArthur finished the game on the Kessel line.

I agree too.
Mac is a pretty decent player on the boards, like Lupul, so he's probably the best fit on that line. Grabbo/Kulie/and JVR found a little chemistry which was nice to see. JVR intercepting that outlet pass from Malkin was frickin sweet. And then zinging it in with a quick shot. I know it's early, but I STILL CANNOT BELIEVE THEY GOT JVR FOR SCHENN. Reimer needs a little lovin - that was a tough, tough spot he got thrown into. One of the most dangerous attacks in the NHL and he came up with an admirable effort. Yes, he should have had the first goal, but that was a sneaky quick release from Malkin after Reims had sort of followed Cros to the middle of the ice. Had Reims seen the pass even a split second sooner, I think he makes that save. The breakaway goal - some are saying it was weak too, but come on - it was a breakaway. And not just any shooter either - best player in the world. Those types find a way to get their goals. That goal is not on Reimer. PK is impressing me. McClement and Komarov are not getting a lot of attention but are playing well. Franson - poor guy. Trade him already if he doesn't fit into your team. Come on. Enough with the healthy scratches. |
