Sort of wonder if missing the playoffs wouldn't be a good thing for the team. Might be time to really move some pieces around there.

I've wondered that myself. I've been a proponent of trading Marleau for a long time. I think he's good, but just lacks heart. I know Roenick gets on him, but the guy just wilts under the pressure of being a leader in my mind. I could be wrong, but he just doesn't have the it factor to make him the great player he should be.

If they do miss, they'll get a top 14 pick, which is huge for them. Their last one in that range was Couture who was a 7th overall if I'm not mistaken. I seriously, even with the rumors that CBJ is willing to trade their 1st. I think moving Marleau and some other bodies, maybe Pavelski (I love the guy, but then again, if Yakupov and Nash come back, then I'm fine lol). Sot it really will be interesting to see what happens.

what do you guys think of Thornton? because i'd rather cut ties with big joe than little joe.

Thornton is a great passer but without ANY instincts of a goal scorer really bothers me.

also, do you guys think the sharks play a system/style where they are some what passive? one dimensional? i cant find the right word for it. they never push back defenses on the rush, attack the seams, or cut through the center of the ice east-west. what i do see is ALOT of chip plays and stop ups at or just across the opposing blue line.

man im so jealous of teams like the penguins or bruins

They do have a very slowed down run and gun if that even makes sense. They do stop short and try to pass across ice a lot. This is effective for holding onto the puck, but it is difficult to do this on a consistent basis outside of the PP.

I do see Couture do more of that hard rush more than most.

Honestly, I like Thornton and I think he's the glue for that team next to Boyle. He may not be the best Playoffs guy, but he does try to bring it. He can score just fine. Sure, he doesn't do a ton of it, but he usually hits about 20 goals a season, which isn't bad. Remember, assist are worth just as much as a goal because his especially set up great shots.

I think there still a bit of gas left for Thornton, but I think what they truly need is a sniper/finisher for him. Which is why something like Nash would be a good complement. From the last few Sharks games I've watched there's isn't a lot of chemistry, he just possesses the puck behind the net comes around to the front and tries to bang it in, goalies are too good now to let such softies in. That or he tries to center it but the defenseman tie up the front of the net and scoring chance ends... It just seems to slow... If you kinda watch the rush teams like TB, NJ, COL, even CGY there's a lot of puck movement in the offensive zone, it's bang pass, bang pass, open man shoot, goal...

A lot of the Sharks is just playing boring lulling puck possession hockey trying to wait to the right opening at the right time... most teams are too well structured defensively now to give up more than 2 or 3 opportunities to the Sharks, which is why they're struggling to get goals at the moment.

With that said, the Sharks have the talent to all of a sudden just turn the corner as well. They usually always have a Feb/start of March lull, then vamp it up before the playoffs... A week from now we could be completely singing a different tune...

i remember during the first few weeks of the season where pavs would skate to the open spot, receive a pass from thornton and get a quality shot off and it went in every time. good ol days

if you were able to replace thornton with brad richards eric staal or getzlaf, would u do it?

To be honest, the only one I'd consider is Getzlaf at this point. Richards is too soft in my mind, and Staal has gotten even more inconsistent. I didn't even know that was possible. Getzlaf is a little injury prone whereas Thornton plays a ton. he's having the best season out of all the players points-wise and it's not really even that close at the moment.

As of now the Sharks are in 11th according to NHL.com. They play Edmonton tonight and I'm hoping I'm going somewhere the game is playing. This like the past few games, is a biggie. This is a team they should beat and if they don't, they're just wasting their games in hand. Apparently Sheppard was recalled and I'm curious if he is in the lineup. I haven't been able to really watch him yet and he is still a top 10 overall draftpick that hasn't panned out.

Sharks got a much needed win and jumped from 11th to 9th due to Colorado winning in OT against the Ducks. I got to watch a decent amount of both, but liked seeing Thornton get a couple points. I like how he jumbled the top line to have Couture-Thornton-Pavelski. That's a dream line in my mind. We'll see if it last when Havlat comes back next week or so. Sounds like he's itching to get back and having the extra body will help. This could be their sneaky way into the playoffs and into the Cup finals where everyone writes them off and they do something about it.
