Why a trapezoid?
Anyone know why they put a trapezoid behind the goalie's net and not a rectangle? I assume there must have been some sort of logic to their decision to use such an irregular shape.

Had something to do with taking away some of the goalie's ability to stop the dump-ins. Instead we have dmen getting stretchered off once every month or two.

It's funny how a lot of commentators refer to the trapezoid as the restricted areas on the two sides. The trapezoid is actually the area immediately behind the net where the goalie can play the puck.
