Default Niittymaki going on IR

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/...back-up-niemi/
Quote:
While virtually everybody was focused on Kyle Wellwood and Ben Eager this morning, Antero Niittymaki suffered a lower body injury and has been placed on injured reserve.

And because the Sharks could not get one of their own goaltenders in the minors here in time for tonight’s game, Jordan White — a netminder with the University of British Columbia — will be serving as Antti Niemi’s backup. The Sharks signed White to a one-game, amateur tryout contract.

White, 22, has played 38 games with the Prince George Cougars and Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. This season, however, he’s playing Canadian college hockey, posting a 7-11 record with a .876 save percentage and a 3.51 GAA.

This marks the second time this season that a Shark was injured during the game-day skate at Rogers Arena. Last visit, Scott Nichol took a puck to the face and ended up missing two games.

That time, however, the injury occurred in plain sight of reporters who were watching the team go through its drills, Nichol was attended to on the ice and needed further help in the locker room area.

This time, I did see Niittymaki at his stall, but we didn’t talk. He didn’t show any outward signs of being hurt and he wasn’t surrounded by the training staff.

****As a bit of background and context, once the first player leaves the ice at the morning skate, the locker room is opened and at that point, most members of the media — myself included — head there to begin interviewing players before they disappear into the showers and dressing areas that are off limits to us.

And, yes, that does mean we would miss something like this if it were obvious on the ice that Niittymaki was hurt.

Wouldn't be ironic if the Sharks were to pick up Nabokov on waiver?

Jordan White was called up.

Looking at his stats, he's nothing to get excited about. They wish they still had Greiss!

He wasn't called up - he was signed to a one-game amateur tryout contract because they didn't have time to callup anyone from their farm team.

He wasn't really called up, he was signed to a one game amateur contract from the University of British Columbia (they were in Vancouver to play the Canucks, no time for a call up).

What happened to Greiss? I would assume they would call up him or Stalock.

I think Greiss is playing in Europe.
