Default opinions on Nick Leddy

Just grabbed him off waivers, as I am trying to shed fossils if I can (Hamrlik).

Didn't realize he was a first round pick and pretty highly touted offensively. I would appreciate any insight and/or projections.

Is this guy worth holding onto, even though he won't do much this year? I am trying to contend, but will eat it a little if he is a solid keeper.

Thanks

He's a good prospect but probably won't be putting up any big points for at least 2-3 years......not a great option if you are trying to contend this year.

he is years away and behind a lot of more established vets in Keith, Campbell, and Seabrook

he is tiny, but offensively gifted. I suspect that someday he will be a valuable fantasy asset, but I wouldn't count on it being sooner than another 4 years or so.

yeap. He might bounce back and forth between the AHL and NHL next year, and hopefully be a full-time NHLer the year after that. Then give him at least two years (and more likely three years) in the NHL before he is putting up anything more than 30 pts a year. Look at Kris Russell's production in Columbus as a comparison. They have similar size, but Russell is probably a smarter, more talented player. Russell might not play for as good a team as Leddy, but Leddy has more veterans ahead of him on the depth chart than Russell.

Leddy will not be like Myers, Subban, Carlson, McBain, Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Karlsson, Hedman, OEL, etc. He is a tier below those young defenders and it will take him a bit longer to develop.

Nice analysis Dawg, good to know.
Looks like I may be shipping him to a rebuilder, but if he sticks for the year (looking more and more likely from what i have read) and gets second PP time, maybe it ups his value for me.

Wouldn't count on second PP time. Sharp and Seabrook play the points on PP1, Keith and Campbell on PP2, and I don't see that changing.

very small sample size I know, but he did get secondary pp time last game and the coach was raving about his play. Certainly not a guarantee by any means, but not a bad sign.

He got secondary power-play time only because the Hawks were up 4-0. Q always does that when the Hawks are up big late. Toews and Kane don't get PP time in those situations either. Guys like Bickell and Pisani do. Heck, even Jake Dowell got some in that game.

good point.

Luckily, we have lots of teams either rebuilding or that are expansion so maybe if he shows some positives in the second half I can move him. Either way, not a bad guy to have as a reserve D.

Thanks
