skimming your section and its awesome. sorry some of it is long and i am at work and not a mtl fan so i cant read it all. but i like your game breakdowns.

wondering what you can tell me about cammy? i was going on him being an 80 point player. seems like he just isnt getting the time or what to get to the PPG level?

Don't count on PPG. For a bunch of reasons:
-Plekanec is not an elite centerman
-Markov is out
-Gomez is not clicking so more focus goes on shutting down the top line
-Jacques Martin and the defensive system
-Lack of overall size up front makes them hit or miss offensively from one game to the next

I could see 70 points over a full schedule but anything more than that won't happen on this team.

I'm a bit under the weather right now and missed a small chunk of the game (end 1st / early 2nd). Here's what I gathered on the Habs tonight:

Team play: The jump was there but in the 2nd half they were unable to sustain any offence after the initial chance. It was always one chance and then the puck is out of the zone. I also found that the Hamrlik/Spacek lack of foot speed was exposed late against Taylor Hall. Still nice to get the point though, as they all add up later.

Tomas Plekanec: Fantastic penalty killer. One of the best forwards in the league when shorthanded. He's also clicking offensively despite no points tonight. All indications point to another 70 point season.

Brian Gionta: Showed a lot of grit tonight, even going after Hall at one point in retaliation to being checked. He's digging pucks in the corner and getting a lot of chances. Fantasy owners should feel comfortable. His numbers should meet expectations by the end of the season.

PK Subban: A rough outing to say the least. Needs to stop trying to be superman and pick his spots a bit better. He has the skill to excel in any situation so if he just tones it down a bit and uses some intelligence things will get back on track. I'm thinking the coaches address this in practice and in most cases lighting a fire under a player has positive short-term results.

Mathieu Darche: Was on the ice for 2 power play goals, and both scores involved him going to the net (he scored one of them). I like the fit here because he has decent size and hands, and works hard around the net. Could find himself in a Holmstrom role for short stretches which could lead to a handful of PPP.

Anthony Calvillo: Showed great poise in the booth. Even when Pierre McGuire made corny comments Calvillo stayed cool and gave crisp answers. That's what champions are made of. Get well soon AC!!!

Just to expand on my Subban note from yesterday:

He is being scratched tonight. In my note I wrote that the coaches would probably talk to him in practice but did have a healthy scratch in the back of my mind. It's not a bad thing, especially with the next game being the night after the big downer game. His next step is to learn how to play like a game-changer while not sacrificing hockey sense and situational awareness. His dumb dive play that led to the 2-on-1 SHG by the Oilers is an example of that. It's not a good time to try a valiant pinch to keep the puck in the zone when you have all 3 forwards trapped deep.

I agree with you but just like Mathias Brunet just tweeted : How can Subban go from the guy with the most ice-time one day, and the next day he's an healthy scratch. That's an over reaction from Martin IMO

It's a tough call, but the main thing is that it's temporary. He'll be back with top ice time shortly.

This game quickly got out of hand and was really a snoozer for most of the game because mid-way through the outcome was no longer in question. This was more about the Devils sucking than the Canadiens playing well though. Unbelievable how bad this team is. It looks really bad that they signed Kovalchuk in exchange for having multiple roster spots given to guys that would otherwise be career AHLers.

I just wanted to point out that I told you so about Darche. He had a power-play assist standing in front of the net. The puck hit him and then Gomez tapped in the loose puck. Another good night of work for the poor man's Holmstrom. I'd consider him a fine short-term pickup in deep leagues.

Yannick Weber looked solid in his first game of the season playing full-time D. He's still the odd man out but this bodes well for him long-term. At least he's showing he can play at the NHL level. Look for him to make the team out of training camp next fall.

You're not lying about the Devils, they are terrible. I'm glad Zajac is the only one I own, too bad I can't trade him for even a 3rd rounder....

Why would you trade Zajac when his value is rock bottom? I agree that the Devils are collectively terrible but individually things should correct themselves with time. Zajac really needs Parise so he'll probably finish with a rough season but that doesn't mean he'll be bad every season moving forward.

TSN has announced that Andrei Markov is indeed done for the season. Not surprising given how long it took to get concrete results. Next is to see if my plan does go through according to my Markov article...
