My apologies to anyone who follows this thread I missed a few days. Life got busy
![]() On This Day in Hockey History - November 26th 1917 The National Hockey League was founded. The original teams were the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, and Quebec Bulldogs (which announced that they would not operate during the inaugural season). I would say this was a pretty significant day in history Frank Calder was elected as the NHL's first president. I never knew this 1925 Pittsburgh Pirates and NY Americans franchises were officially acccepted into the NHL. The Americans purchased the Hamilton Tigers roster to fill its lineup, while the Pirates purchased the USHL's Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets. NHL announced it's new "anti-defense" rule, which would prohibit teams from having more than two players in their own zone when the puck was not present. The NHL also upped the number of regular season games from 30 to 36 for the upcoming season. What a strange rule! 1961 Detroit's Gordie Howe became the first player in NHL history to play in 1,000 career regular season games, when the Red Wings lost 4-1 at Chicago 1975 Bobby Orr played his final game with Boston, scoring a goal and adding an assist, in a 6-4 Bruins' win over the Rangers at MSG. Orr finished with 264 goals, 888 points in 631 games with Boston, before joining Chicago. 1980 Edmonton rookie Jari Kurri got his first NHL hat trick and added an assist, and Wayne Gretzky scored a goal and picked up four assists to lead the Oilers to a 10-3 win over the Black Hawks. 1983 Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky began an NHL-record 17 consecutive game assist streak, at St. Louis. It came in the midst of his NHL record 51-game point scoring streak (during which he scored 153 points). Oilers lost 8-6 to Blues. 1984 Two days after playing against Detroit, Montreal's Guy Lafleur announced his "first" retirement. He ended his "first" career with 518 goals and a Canadiens' team record of 728 assists for a team record 1,246 points. 1999 Steve Yzerman scored his 600th NHL goal in the Red Wings 4-2 win against the visiting Edmonton Oilers. Yzerman joined Gretzky, Howe, Dionne and Messier as the only NHL players with 600 goals and 900 assists. Detroit's Larry Murphy became the fourth player (and first defenseman) in NHL history to appear in 1,500 career NHL games. The milestone came in a 4-2 win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers. Murphy picked up two assists in the game This would later be broken by Scott Stevens on the SAME DAY (see below) 2003 Scott Stevens set an NHL record for defenseman by playing in his 1,616th career NHL game (breaking the record held by Larry Murphy) as the Devils tied 3-3 against the Mighty Ducks, at Anaheim.

On This Day in Hockey History - November 30th
1993 STRIKE NHL Officials announced the end of their strike, which had begun on November 15, 1993. 1995 MILESTONE: Kings' Rick Tocchet scored a goal for his 700th career NHL point, as Los Angeles won 3-2 over Washington, at the Forum. 1996 STAT Mario Lemieux had a goal and three assists for his 1,400th career point and Ron Francis added a goal and two assists for his 900th career assist in the Penguins' 6-2 win over Boston. Lemiuex became the 9th NHL player to score 1,400 points. Two AWESOME NHLers! 2001 STAT Peter Bondra scored twice to set a franchise record for career goals (breaking Mike Gartner's club record of 397) as the Capitals won 6-2 against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. I was always caught cheering for Peter Bondra - very talented 2002 INDUCTION: Former NHL stars Peter Stastny, Stan Mikita and Vaclav Nedomansky were inducted into the newly created Slovak Hockey Hall of Fame in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. 2003 TRADE Los Angeles Kings acquired forward Martin Straka from the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Martin Strbak and winger Sergei Anshakov. BOLD PREDICTION of the NIGHT - November 30th, 2010 I have a feeling that tonight will be the night of the "hat tricks" where we see at least 3 players get one.

DEATH - George "Punch" Imlach, the former General Manager of Toronto and Buffalo, died in Scarborough, Ontario, at the age of 69. 1989 STAT - Buffalo's Pierre Turgeon scored his first career NHL hat trick and picked up two assists to lead the Sabres to a 6-4 win over the Devils, their 10th consecutive win at the Aud. Hitchcock replaced Glen Sonmor as the winningest coach in Stars' history. 2000 TEAM RECORD - Calle Johansson picked up two assists to become the Washington Capitals all-time leader in assists by a defenseman, in a 3-2 win over the visiting Boston Bruins. Johansson broke the mark of 31 set by Scott Stevens. Mike Green currently has 157 assists in 337 games for those of you who were curious. I was 2001 MILESTONE - Ed Belfour became the Dallas Stars' all-time leader in career victories, when he picked up #146 in a 6-4 win at Edmonton. He broke the mark of 145 set by Minnesota North Stars goaltender Cesare Maniago. It was also his 350th NHL win. 2002 San Jose Sharks fired head coach Darryl Sutter. Doug Wilson and Cap Raeder were named as interim coaches. The move came after the Sharks stumbled to an 8-12-2-2 start to the 2002-03 season. Anyone else think it would be ironic if the Flames fired Sutter again on December 1st? C'mon, DO it! |

Great thread! Very fun read. I would have loved to have been around for some of the older moments. More historical dates would be cool.
