On this Day in Hockey History - November 15

There were some doozies on this day....check them out!

1915 - The NHA (forerunner of the National Hockey League) agreed to pay no more than $800 to each player for the upcoming season. $800 looks like a penny on the sidewalk after Kovalchuk signed his $100 million dollar contract this past summer

1973 - Boston's Bobby Orr had three power play goals and added four assists to become the first NHL defenseman to score seven points in one game, as the Bruins beat the New York Rangers 10-2. 7 poins by a dman! That's fantasy GOLD!

1984 - Philadelphia retired uniform #16, worn by center Bobby Clarke, who ended his 15-year career as Philadelphia's all-time leading scorer (1,210 points). I had no idea that Clarke's jersey was retired. I learned something today

1992 - Philadelphia rookie Eric Lindros scored three goals for his first career NHL hat trick, and added an assist, and Mark Recchi had a goal and four assists to lead the Flyers to a 7-2 win over Ottawa at the Spectrum. ahhh I miss the BIG E. He was my favourite player of all time

2002 - Patrick Roy became the NHL career leader in minutes played, passing Terry Sawchuk as the Avalanche lost 4-2 to the Stars at Dallas.

2002 - Dallas' Mike Modano became the 5th U.S. born player to reach the 1,000 NHL point milestone, when he picked up an assist as the Stars won 4-2 against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

On This Day in Hockey History - Novermber 16

1926
MILESTONE: Rookie Eddie Shore made his NHL debut as the Boston Bruins opened their third NHL season with a 4-1 win over the Canadiens

MILESTONE: Goaltending great George Hainsworth made his first NHL appearance as the Montreal Canadiens lost, 4-1 in Boston.
Both Eddie Shore and George Hainsworth made their NHL debut against each other...Pretty neat

1957
STAT: Detroit goalie Terry Sawchuk got his 70th career shutout as the Red Wings beat the Black Hawks 1-0 at Chicago Arguably the best goaltender EVER

1991
STAT: Red Wings' Steve Yzerman scored twice to become the third player in franchise history to score 350 goals. The milestone goal (along with an assist ) came as Detroit won 5-3, at Los Angeles

1993
MILESTONE: Paul Holmgren resigned as coach of the Hartford Whalers and named assistant General Manager Pierre McGuire as the new head coach while Holmgren continued as the General Manager. Monster Decision!!!!!!!!!!!

1998
MILESTONE: Hockey Hall of Fame inducted it's newest members: Peter Stastny, Michel Goulet, and veteran Roy Conacher. Peter Stastny was one of my favourites from the "old days"

2003
TRADE: Calgary Flames acquired goalie Miikka Kiprusoff from the San Jose Sharks, in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick in 2005. Kiprusoff went on to lead the NHL in GAA etc. Kiprusoff went on to have a record of 24-10-4, and led the NHL with a 1.69 GAA. What a DAMN good deal in hindsight for Calgary - awful for SJ

See ya Tomorrow! Enjoy (i hope)

On this Day in Hockey History - November 17th

1922
The Swedish Ice Hockey Federation was founded

1932
When Detroit met Montreal for the first time in the season there was a problem: both teams had nearly identical red jerseys! The Wings were forced to wear white pullovers in a 1-0 loss. George Hainsworth recorded his 68th career shutout.

1974
Rangers rookie Rick Middleton set a team rookie record with five points in a 10-0 win over the Oakland Seals. Middleton had four goals (his 1st career hat trick) along with an assist. Gilles Villemure recorded his 12th career shutout.

1992
Arturs Irbe made 39 saves to record the first shutout in the San Jose Sharks team history, a 6-0 win over the Kings, at the Cow Palace in Oakland, California. It came in the Sharks' 99th all-time NHL game. It was also Irbe's first career shutout.
Ahhhh, I miss those big white pillow pads Irbe used to wear

1996
Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Darius Kasparaitis and Andreas Johansson from the New York Islanders in exchange for Bryan Smolinski.

1997
Mario Lemieux, Bryan Trottier, Glen Sather, Flyers' announcer Gene Hart, and Hockey News founder Ken McKenzie were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, in Toronto.
Good Induction Group. I loved Lemieux (almost as much as Crosby )

2003
Dallas Stars acquired veteran defenceman Jon Klemm and a 2004 4th round draft pick from the Chicago Blackhawks, in exchange for Stephane Robidas and a 2004 second round pick

Edmonton Oilers announced the signing of free agent Adam Oates
Love Oates but he needs to get that NJ Powerplay going

On This Day in Hockey History- November 22nd

1943
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Former NHL star Yvan Cournoyer born in Drummondville, Que. Cournoyer played in the NHL 1963-64 through 1978-79 with Montreal.
"The Roadrunner!"

1947
STAT Red Wing Gordie Howe scored the first of his 118 regular season game-winning goals. Detroit beat Chicago at home, 8-5.
Fun Fact - On NHL.com they have Jagr listed as the all time leader in career regular season GW goals with 112. Unfortunately, they do not have the stats for Howe in the GW goals cat. He would indeed be 1st on that list.

1962
MILESTONE Toronto's Red Kelly became just the third player in NHL history to appear in 1,000 NHL games; the milestone came in a 1-0 Maple Leafs loss at Chicago.

1972
TEAM LEADER Toronto's Dave Keon scored his 297th career goal to become the Maple Leafs' All-Time leading goal scorer, passing Frank Mahovlich and George Armstrong (who each had 296 goals). Maple Leafs lost 3-1 to the North Stars, in Minnesota.

NHL RECORD: Penguins set an NHL record with five goals in a span of 2:07 during a 10-4 win over the Blues, in Pittsburgh. Scoring were Bryan Hextall, Jean Pronovost, Al McDonough, Ken Schinkel & Ron Schock, on goalie Wayne Stephenson.

1978
GM HIRING Winnipeg Jets (of the WHA) hired John Ferguson as their General Manager. He was fired nearly 10 years later, on October 30, 1988.

1980
COACHING CHANGE: Edmonton Oilers fired coach Bryan Watson. General Manager Glen Sather took behind the bench.
We all know what happened in the next 10 years

1983
COACHING CHANGE Winnipeg Jets named Barry Long as head coach, replacing GM John Ferguson, who had taken over after firing Tom Watt two weeks earlier.

1986
MILESTONE Buffalo's Gilbert Perreault played in the 1,191st (and final) game of his 17-year NHL career as the Sabres lost to the Quebec Nordiques 3-1. Perreault retired 22nd on all-time games played list.
Perreault is a player I wish I could have seen (or remembered) play the game. From all things I have read - he was a dandy

1989
TEAM RECORD: Doug Wilson became the first defenseman in Chicago Blackhawks history to score 200 goals, when the team lost 6-3 at Los Angeles.

STAT: Kings' Larry Robinson became just the second defenseman in NHL history to score 700 career assists. He reached the milestone in a 6-3 win over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks.

1991
STAT: Vancouver defenseman David Babych scored the only hat trick of his NHL career, with the final goal coming in overtime to lead the Canucks to a 6-5 win over Calgary.

STAT: Detroit rookie Vladimir Konstantinov had three assists in a 4-3 Red Wings' win over the Minnesota North Stars, at Joe Louis Arena.
What a terrible accident. I wish we could have s.een Vladdie play longer

1997
TEAM STAT:Curtis Joseph became the first goalie in Edmonton Oilers history to record back-to-back shutouts, in a 1-0 victory at Ottawa

1999
HHOF INDUCTION Seven months after retiring as a player, Wayne Gretzky was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, along with referee Andy Van Hellemond and builder Scotty Morrison.
Isn't it great that Gretzky choose to RETIRE in the year 1999? How fitting. I wonder if that was his plan all along
