Carlson has arrived. Hedman may be the best, long term. Pietrangelo hasn't shown what he can do. All three could be fantasy studs, and probably will be. As far as a calculated pick, give me Hedman, too much skill.
On second thought, give me all three.

At the moment, Carlson for his fantastic effort at blocking shots.
Washington's been in a slump but that can't last - deciding factor for this year will probably be if he breaks out with the rest of the team.... |

Carlson & Pietrangelo both have more offensive upside than Hedman. Hedman's advantage is defensively where he could be a real force. Hedman has a more plain vanilla offensive style.
Carlson & AP have that extra creativity especially AP. Carlson much better at joining the rush while AP is the better playmaker of all 3. Problem with Carlson is that Green will hog the PP time and Ovechkin needs to move up. I expect a lot of changes in Washington next season. One aspect that does play in Hedman's favour is there is little competition ahead of him or behind him currently. Cant really go too wrong on any of them though. I consider them safe picks. |

They will all be very good players, but to be honest I give the edge to Hedman. I think he is the surest bet to be a franchise defenseman in the Lidstrom (or Doughty) mold. Hedman dominaed men in the SEL as a 17-year-old, and in fact he had more points as a defenseman than Kopitar had as a forward at the same age. There is HUGE offensive upside there, and we will see a lot more of that IMO as he continues to mature. The trick with Hedman is that one he explodes, it will be almost impossible to trade for him.
Of course, Dukla and I have been debating Hedman all summer, and I suppose our biases are showing through a bit. ![]() This was recently posted on rotowire about Hedman, courtesy of the Tampa Bay Tribune: Hedman's great play so far this season has impressed his coach and teammates, reports the Tampa Tribune. He struggled mightily last season and started slowly in camp this year. But he quickly adjusted and is flying right now. "He has made tremendous leaps since the beginning of the year. Up to now, we've got no choice but to play him a lot because he's playing so well," Bolts' coach Guy Boucher said. The Lightning's new system clearly fits Hedman and teammate Steven Stamkos is impressed with his franchise defender: "He's carrying the puck a lot more, he's jumping into the rush, and he's utilizing his size and speed. It's pretty unusual to have that kind of combination. The biggest thing I've noticed is that his pass is right on." His keeper value has always been high but some of his owners may be impatient with his progress. Go pounce -- this guy is going to explode.

My only long term issue with Hedman is I feel his offense will come gradually similar to a Pronger.
