What Commish says sounds good, but if I can choose between a $5M defenseman who puts up 50 points and a $12M defenseman who puts up 65, I\'ll save the money and invest in forwards with a much higher overhead. Are those ten to fifteen points worth $5-$7M when you could go for an elite scoring forward?

In my experience, the difference between an average d-corps and a good one can win a championship. The difference between a good one and an excellent one, though, isn\'t really that significant when you compare it with a good versus excellent set of forwards. Simple economics, invest your money where you think it will pay the highest dividends.

But all of this, again, can be called into question depending on your options in terms of other keepers and potential pickups. If available talent is limited, Pronger may very well be the source of those higher dividends. Nobody can tell you for sure without knowing what the field or your roster look like.

I agree with TG. The drop off from the number one or two d-man to the number 50 d-man is not as great as the drop from the #1 forward to the #50 forward. Pronger gives you all categories guaranteed. You have three of the top 5 d right now so you can get away with it but you have to look at what\'s coming avail in September draft and who you have a shot of getting.

If you think you can get Pronger back take the risk. It\'s all about what\'s being leftover come September..start talking up your league-mates to see who they\'re dropping. If there\'s nothing good come September what good is the extra $20 going to be if you\'re spending it on a 2nd rate winger.

P.S. Pronger\'s tiny feet have cost a few games in each of the past couple of years. I wouldn\'t be surprised to see him on the band-aid boy list in the near future. It\'s been a recurring problem.

Excellent points made by Thiefing Giraffe and gdon. Over the years I may have developed an unhealthy affection for those type of multiple category defencemen. In my salary cap pool with similar scoring categories and number of keepers, I have Pronger, Gonchar and Boyle! Every year, I am up against the cap early in the draft and am forced to try and pull those gems out of a certain orafice.

I still think you build with your defence and goalies, but you\'ve also got Niedermayer and Boyle. If you think you have a shot at getting him back at a lower price, go for it. Worst case scenario is that you have extra money to spend on replacing Pronger with a lesser defenceman and a better forward. Good Luck!
