Okay boys and girls, I have a bit of a problem in my keeper league, and would like some input...4 Center, 4 LW, 4 RW, 6 D-men, and 2 Goalies...of which you can only protect 13-15 roster spots going into our auction draft in September. I currently have Scott Niedermeyer, Pronger and Boyle on D, and am very comfortable with them, but with Pronger making almost $12 on a team payroll cap of $80, is he worth protecting? Or would that money be better spent on improving my forward spots? Keep in mind, our point categories are goals, assists, +/-, and Pims. Thanks in advance....

I realize it is difficult to guage the situation, with so many unknowns, but I am basically looking at is Pronger worth what he brings me in return. Is he one of the best all round D men in the league? Absolutely, but is he worth taking up 15% of my 20 man roster? That is the question...

Do you have other players worth protecting? Can you trade down to decrease your salary hit and pick up a good D man or forward that you would like to protect? Just cutting a player of this calibre loose doesn\'t seem right to me - but maybe the particular league format warrants it.

If you don\'t keep guys like Pronger and Niedermayer, you\'ll spend 3-5 years trying to get a defenceman that gives you points, +/- and pen mins. Defencemen of that calibre are very rare. Pronger\'s one of those players I go after when they\'ve had a bad season and their owner sours on them. Then I\'ll hang on to him as long as I can.
For sure $12 out of $80 for only one player is a lot. My question would be, can you get enough $1 or $2 guys to fill the gaps? With 13-15 protections and only 20 players on the roster, you would only need 5-7 players at the draft. The players available at the draft shouldn\'t be top end players. You should be ok as long as you\'re scouting staff can uncover a couple of diamonds in the rough! (Paul Stastny or Parise come to mind) One thing both Pronger and Niedermayer have going for them is their situation in Anaheim is stable. Great team (affects +/-), all the PP time they can handle, good young forwards to feed the puck to and under contract for the few years. You KNOW what you\'re getting with these two guys for the next 2-3 years. That\'s GOLD! I\'d be keeping Boyle as well. TB had a tough year, it took them about a month to get started and he still ended up 4th in Def scoring. TB should be better next year, therefore so should Boyle\'s +/-.

I definitely see your point, and that is the way I have been leaning with regards to this matter. That being said, if I were to protect the minimum 13, and let Pronger go back into the auction draft, then I would have over $20 of cap space going in, and I could conceivably pick up Pronger at a reduced salary...this would of course depend on what other GM\'s in my league will do of course. It really pains me to let him go, because of what could happen, but, as they say one in the hand is worth two in the bush, or something like that...I think I have to keep him, atleast I know what to expect out of him, as opposed to the endless what if scearios I would be facing with some other possible players. Thanks!
