Hi Dobbs,
Saw your ramblings about Predator Prospect Patric Hornqvist breaking Forsberg\'s Swedish rookie record and went \"ooooohh\", but then I looked him up and I see that he played 47 games for Djurgardens IF last season (5G 2A 7Pts). The Hockey News doesn\'t show this as the junior team or one in the second division so I\'m confused, how many games do you need to play to no longer be considered a rookie in Sweden? By comparison, Forsberg\'s 23g effort in 1992-93 for Modo, which I presume to be the record Hornqvist just broke, came the year AFTER he played 39 games for Modo the season prior to that, after he played 23 games in the 90-91 season before that one and after his first action in the SEL in the 89-90 season where he played his first SEL game. Waz up?

Hornqvist didn\'t break the record for most goals by a rookie- rather, that\'s most goals by a junior, which is of course defined as any player who is still of junior hockey age.

Junior performance aside, beward the Hornqvist bandwagon. He is at best an average skater, which doesn\'t bode well for a guy that\'s just 5\'11\".
Not saying he has no future - far from it - but don\'t expect him to become another Peter Forsberg in the NHL.

Bugg,
Thanks for the clarification. Still, do you share Giraffe\'s caution?

Ye, I do. You need to put Hornqvist\'s numbers in perspective:
Peter Forsberg- Scored 23-24-47 in just 39 games to lead Modo in scoring as a 19/20 year-old. Markus Naslund- First 20+ goal season was 22 as an 18/19 year-old. He was Modo\'s leading scorer that season. Kent Nilsson- Scored 30 goals as a 20/21 year-old, leading his team in goals by 17 and points by 18. All three were there team\'s best player and leading scorer. As for Hornqvist, he finished a distant second in Djurgardens scoring- in fact, linemate Fredrik Bremberg had almost double as many points! (64 vs.34). However, scoring 20 goals at that age is still a ridiculously rare feat. I feel Hornqvist will have a long and useful career as a complimentary winger. He\'s rough, defensively responsible, and loves to play in traffic. There\'s also that matter of a terrific release. He\'ll slot in perfectly with a guy like Legwand, but could also do damage with a premier playmaker like Forsberg. At this point, I\'d project a few 60+ point seasons out of him. |
