Default Ryan Getzlaf

Through three games of the Vancouver/Anaheim series, you would expect to see Pronger, Niedermayer, and Selanne dominating. While Pronger has been putting up points and Selanne had a huge game one, the best Duck skater has clearly been sophomore pivot Ryan Getzlaf. He has been controlling the play both with his size and skill, making it nearly impossible for opposing defensemen to slow him down.

Getzlaf has that rare combination of size, skill, and skating ability that is seen in few centres (Nieuwendyk, Modano, guys like that). He is also a right handed shot, something that shouldn\'t be overlooked. Most people in the fantasy world know his upside and how he is one of the top young players in the entire league, but much like Parise I don\'t think a lot of people expected him to be this good so early. I could see Getzlaf surpassing a point-per-game next season, obviously dependent on ice time.

Back when I was really stupid, after no one picked him up in the year\'s waiver draft, I got him on my team....and when he was demoted I dropped him. For some crappy player who was active, likely. I\'ve been regretting it ever since.
He\'s such a good player.

I think a Mark Messier comparison is in order. Big, powerful, talented, great skater and a leader. He is going to be a good one, maybe never a scoring champion but a star player nonetheless.

I completely agree. In fact, I predict that he will score 1791 points next season to surpass Messier for #2 on the all-time scoring list, then have an off-season with just 971 points to pass Gretzky in 2008-09. With nothing left to prove, he will then retire after just four seasons in the NHL, leaving us all to wonder what might have been. Why would you leave us like that, Ryan? Why???

I get it. You don\'t like him enough to say he has Mark Messier potential. I think there are alot of similarities. I guess the key word is potential and he is just starting.

Hey, 18 years from now - who knows? If he never gets hurt and he has a 20-year career, he\'ll probably have at least 1300 or 1400 points. If he calls winning a series and leading his team to some cups, the comparisons will be prevalent.
You never know!

I\'d also like to say that I think Getzlaf will be a better player than Malkin. I wouldn\'t take him over Malkin in fantasy leagues (Malkin will be a consistent 100+ point guy), but that is the kind of impact he will have. Best forward in the Western Conference within three seasons.

Could be of course that someday you\'ll be right, but as a rule I avoid such early comparisons... especially to somebody like Messier, whose greatest asset was not his considerable skill, but the aggression he played with. Man, what a mean streak. Like a bulldog with its tail on fire, 24/7.

Remember Messier started off on the 4th line as a grinder.
