haha

thanks shoeless! i picked my team moreso to increase my vernacular and spelling abilities than their hockey value. it\'s a new strategy i\'m working on.

i\'ll let you know how it turns out.

ps - i just picked up petteri nummelin as well, not because he\'ll be getting d and w eligibility soon, but because his name is just ridiculous and ward brought nothing to the table, phoenetically.

Gagne vows to take his time recovering

By WAYNE FISH
phillyBurbs.com

This time, Simon Gagne swears he’s going to be more cautious.

After admitting he probably came back too soon from his first bout with concussion-like symptoms, the Flyers left wing vowed to take more time off before jumping back into NHL action with his latest woes, which include dizziness and fatigue.

When a return date might be is anyone’s guess.

This much we do know: Gagne was examined by team doctor Gary Dorshimer on Friday. While Dorshimer continues to decline to use the word “concussion” in describing Gagne’s condition, the simple matter is that it took Gagne three attempts before passing a baseline test the last time around and now says he isn’t ready to take another since once again complaining of symptoms.

Gagne, originally injured on Oct. 25, was still not feeling quite right on Friday, Nov. 2 but then experienced a big turnaround the following day. He practiced for the first time with the Flyers last Sunday, then jumped into a game at New York against the Rangers.

By the NHL’s former guidelines, Gagne would have had to be “symptomfree” for at least a week before playing again. But that protocol apparently went up in smoke with the new collective bargaining agreement in 2005.

“I’m the type of person where I’m going to put pressure on myself to come back,” Gagne admitted on Friday at the Skate Zone. “Maybe that’s a mistake I did. Maybe I took it as a regular injury, like a shoulder or groin.

“Those kinds of injuries, [at] your head, you need to make sure you’re a hundred percent…not 95 percent, not 90. That’s something you can’t take any chances with.”

And so he says both he and the Flyers will proceed much more slowly this time.

“If I came back too soon … I thought I was physically fine to come back,” Gagne said. “But on the other side, I only had one practice, too. I was feeling fine, so my big test was to play a game. Maybe this time I will wait and have a couple good practices. See how I feel the next day. Maybe that’s the plan we have now.

“I don’t know if it’s wakeup call. Next time I will be 105 percent when I come back.”

General manager Paul Holmgren acknowledged the situation has now changed. A relapse would seem to indicate the problem might go a little deeper than originally suspected.

“It might just be that we didn’t allow him to get his feet back under himself before he played,” Holmgren said.

“I think we’re going to be a little more careful moving forward here. Give him a chance to get some more exercise in — whether he skates hard on his own, or practices hard with the team before he plays with the team.”

Holmgren said the training staff is exploring other possibilities, such as dehydration, for the cause of Gagne’s fatigue.

He’s steering away from use of the word “concussion” for now.

“No one has used that word with me. I don’t know if it [concussion] is being avoided. We’re treating Simon accordingly. We’re taking our time with him, we’re being careful. The fact that he played in N.Y., he wanted to play. Our doctors felt he was fine. He’s one of our better players.

“But we’re not going to put him at risk.\"

Not surpised...that sounds just about right. What gets me is that Holmgren said \"But we’re not going to put him at risk.\"

HAHAHA! Too late man, you already did! It reminds me of Jason Allison back on the Kings where he sustained 3 concussions over a two week span...

Great info Shook81. Well researched. As you may have guessed, I\'m a Gagné owner in my league so I\'m a little biased.

There now...that wasn\'t so hard to say now was it?

Flyers LW Gagne diagnosed with mild concussion
November 14, 2007

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Philadelphia Flyers left wing Simon Gagne was diagnosed with a mild concussion by team doctors on Wednesday.

Gagne has not played since November 7, when he was injured during a 3-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

\"Right now, it\'s a day at a time,\" Gagne said. \"Hopefully it\'s not going to be too long. If it takes a week, or two weeks, or more than that, that\'s the time it\'s going to take. ... After that, the big test will be practicing with the team. I\'m really going to test myself hard before I come back and play.\"

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren admitted that the team has been cautious with Gagne after he first experienced dizziness after a game against the Florida Panthers on October 24. Gagne left that game after being hit by defenseman Jay Bouwmeester in the first period and did not return.

\"We\'ve treated this like a concussion all along,\" Holmgren said. \"In saying that, we did do a lot of different tests with Simon and looked into a lot of things. The fact that his symptoms have remained constant with varying degrees over the last few days; it was not fully diagnosed as a mild concussion until today.\"

Fueled by the addition of center Daniel Briere, Gagne was off to a fast start this season with four goals and four assists in 10 games.

The 22nd overall pick in 1998, the 27-year-old Gagne has 205 goals and 195 assists in 512 career contests. He has reached the 20-goal plateau in six of his seven seasons, including a pair of 40-goal campaigns.

IR is used when they need to open a roster spot for a replacement - the Phillies obviously feel they have adequate coverage with the forwards they have and don\'t want to call anyone up.
