I think the rumours that this trade is on hold because Calgary wants something else back (Gilroy) have to be true. I don't see a reason for Sutter to do this deal if Gilroy isn't involved.

Kotalik and Higgins are guys that could be easily acquired via waiver wire. How kotalik makes 3 million is beyond me.

Terrible trade for the Flames if these 4 players are all that is included.

Apparently Calgary WANTS Higgins (expiring contract). Not really sure.

i could make sense of the phaneuf one, but this rumoured ranger deal is like a bad dream. here's what i wrote in an email to a friend this morning:

The rumoured Jokinen trade though.... ugh. I hate the guy just as much as the next guy but that is a brutal deal. Higgins is a checker, of which we have plenty already. Kotalik is straight up one of the worst signings of the last couple years. He has a good PP point shot but that is pretty much it. I can't imagine Sutter ever actually trading for that guy. At $3M for another two years it essentially wipes out any cap savings we got from moving Phaneuf.

The only way that 2nd deal makes sense is if its setting up for something bigger. Look how many forwards we have now:

Iginla, Conroy, Langkow, Moss, Dawes, Glencross, Stajan, Hagman, Bourque, Lundmark (okay, can be sent down), Kotalik, Hagman, McGrattan, Nystrom, Backlund (can be sent down), Boyd, Mayers. That's 17, or 15 if you send down the guys on 2-way contracts.

So, either there is another trade coming where we give many-for-one, or perhaps Dawes and Moss are hurt way more seriously than anyone thinks and are expected to be out for the rest of the year.

Looks like Kotalik might have said no to waiving his no trade, and the flames want Callahan instead of Higgins..

At least it's a bit better, but I still hope it doesn't happen

Callahan is a silly rumor. He has infinitely more value than Jokinen - potentially future captain of the Rangers.

He is a vastly superior player to both Higgins and Kotalik.

Angus, what do you think of Callahan going further? He scored alot of goals in junior, just wonmdering if you think this will carry over into his NHL career at any time soon?? What should we expect from him in the next few years?

He reminds me of Pominville sometimes, not sure why??

Not sure he will become a goal scorer... but he has the skills to be a solid 25 goal 25 assist guy year-in and year-out. Some bigger years mixed in there depending on linemate quality.

apparently conroy is on the shelf for the entire year. i'll say it again... i wonder if the injuries to moss and dawes aren't more serious, and the jokinen deal is an actual attempt at getting top 9 bodies and there is no further blockbuster coming. its possible sutter has also decided that glencross and nystrom are essentially playing like 4th liners, so why not play them on the 4th line.

hagman- stajan - iginla
boyd - backlund - bourque
higgins - langkow - kotalik
glencross - mayers/nystrom - mayers/mcgrattan

injured: moss, dawes, conroy

the only thing keeping me from puking is the realization that this group of forwards is a bit better than the group that last took the flames past the 1st round... i guess.

I don't get these deals at all...

I was shocked what the Leafs ended up trading for Phaneuf (poor play/rumoured attitude aside). Plus, they got Aulie and a roster player in return. Crazy. I don't even think that deal would go through on NHL 10.

But than Sutter follows it up with the Jokinen trade!? WTF?

Either Sutter has something up his sleeve or he's completely lost all his marbles. My biggest complaint is adding Kotalik's 3 yr $3M dollar salary! You could make the argument the Phaneuf deal was a salary dump in some way but than why would you turn around and add another $3M hit for the next couple of years for a streaky player? Why not just hang on to Jokinen and get rid of him at the end of the year? Sure, he hasn't clicked with Iginla so far but at least you'd be out from his contract at the end of this year. Why add on more committed salary for a few years for an average (at best) player just to save a bit of money for the rest of this year?

Doesn't make sense to me.
