I have been in the same keeper league for 5 or 6 years. The guys in it started out all working together but over the years none of us do anymore. We have filtered out a couple of teams and added a couple new ones last year. Everyone keeps their teams current and such, but it has just gotten boring. No one wants to banter or trash talk. There are only a couple of guys besides myself that will make trades, even the really bad couple of teams at the bottom wont make trades! It is very frustrating for me as I am someone who likes being super involved, constantly checking FA's and stats and proposing trades....
So my question is: is there some way to kick start the fun factor of this league? Again, no one is doing anything wrong, I just feel it isn't what I am after anymore. Has this happened to other guys/leagues? Is it just time for me to move on perhaps? I guess this is really just more of a whine/rant than anything...LOL

The thing is.....if people dont want to trade, they dont want to trade. But yea, I feel your pain. If guys arent going to really care enough to try to improve there teams, you're kinda stuck. It just cant be 1 person trying. It has to be a league-wide effort.
Im in a similar bullshit situation. Every once in a while I try to post things on the message board to try to stimulate trading or anything to make it fun. It usually falls on deaf ears though. So I usually just insult everybody in the league and tell them that they're not Barack Obama and that there lives arent busy enough to warrant not doing anything to make the league fun. If nothing else, it let's me vent. Just bear with it. Worse comes to worse, join a league with some of us next year. My Dobber Pirates League is ridiculously active and competitive. |

i think it comes down to how your league is set up. i know in my keeper league where we are in yr 2 of the league, it has been a drop of talks and such from last yr but its still pretty active.
i havent been in leagues that long (5-6yrs), but maybe suggest a redraft. basically starting over but this will mix things up and maybe get people more interested. maybe suggest that you can keep 1 player and then redraft or do a whole new draft.

I have had a problem with this in my league with my roommates and close friends. We've been at it for so long that we all know each other's preferences and styles and what not. We've also all grown quite adept at fantasy hockey so it's really hard to gain an edge in this league. Not to mention since we all know what we are doing and it is just a recurring one year league, trades become that much more difficult to execute.
Now sure, there's a lot of banter and trash talk because most of us live together, so we get the real face to face smack talking. But to a certain extent I think that actually tones it down because what you'll say to a persons face is not always what you'll type to a computer screen. I just think that the longer you have a league together it can become easier to know what to offer in trades but it also becomes harder to come up with a trade that you think will gain you an edge. I think this can be good for your league though, to have 8 or more guys who really know their stuff and make it super competitive. I agree with NYR though, it has to be a team effort to liven things up. No one person can take on the challenge.

Not sure I like the redraft option so much. It is punishing the ones who have worked to make their team better. I am in 3rd place, I think I can finish as good as 2nd or as poorly as 5th. 1st place is a run away this year. But most of the rest except for the bottom 2 are still battling it out. And we only keep 10 players a year and have a draft for the rest.
Yeah, there is zero hockey talk. I try, but as you say, dies a slow miserable death usually! LOL...there are times I wish I could toss all my good players just so I could keep shuffling FA's in and out of the line up to keep it interesting! hahaha I will hang with it for this year, but I suspect next year I may look for a different or an additional league.

New leagues tend to be very active. As GMs settle into the process, they aren't as inclined to do as much trading.
League setups also play a significant role in whether or not there is much trading. Salary cap really hurts trading, once the lineups are set. GM style plays a huge role. Some guys would change their entire lineup around every month. Other guys are much more stand pat. When playing for a long time, some guys just aren't as interested, or they have fallen way behind and quit pulling the trigger so much. Part of that is do to their fewer number of assets. Your league sounds relatively normal to me. My son joined a league this year. They have cap and waivers. He reports to me that there has only been one trade since rosters were declared. All other action is on the waiver wire. Making trades can be very difficult. To improve your odds, make certain that you have looked at the other guys needs first and your needs second. I got a bite today. I offered to fill a hole in the other guys lineup. I didn't ask for any position in return. I suggested about 15 things he has that I could potential look at. He had three or more choices on my side to look at. No deal yet, but his gears are grinding!

Yeah, I put a lot of work into my trade offers actually. I have pulled off a few trades this year, but I like to trade and it is "almost" impossible to improve your team simple from free agents after a certain point.
I guess the problem isn't so much with the other guys that know what they are doing, but we have a few that really don't, even though they have been playing for years. They still only really have one or two real assets, but refuse to try and trade or even rarely grab FA's..... Oh well, it's only a hockey pool! LOL

Make the prize money more. people will get more competitive. If it is a h2h try and take a side bet for the week. If the person you play in the h2h won't bet you, trash talk him to death

Make it a weekly prize or a monthly prize to keep interest up as well as year end prizes.
