Default Giroux's Value

Another manager is interested in Giroux. He's on my do-not-trade-for-anything list. Are either Toews or D. Sedin enough to pull the trigger, though?

I'm not looking to win for a few years.

I am really high on Giroux as well, and he has been given every opportunity to play on a scoring line in Philly. If your league has a cap, I would not make this move as Toews will be very expensive after this year, and D.Sedin already is. I would hold onto Giroux if you are waiting 2 yrs down the road as he should imporve significantly, but if you really want to move him then I would go with Toews. I think the Sedins have topped out at 80pt players (which is great) but Toews and Giroux have the potential to produce more in the future. Hope this mess of ideas helps.

Giroux should be a solid 2nd line player but don't overate him.

I would definitely take Toews in return!

In looking at your list of forwards, the only reason not to swap Giroux for Toews or Sedin would be salary cap as mentioned earlier. Both Toews and Sedin have shown the ability to produce while Giroux has the potential to. Both Toews and Sedin are front line players who will give you production now and in the future while providing an immediate upgrade to your starting forwards. No knock on Giroux, but you have the opportunity to get a relatively young proven commodity in return. Giroux may take a little while to reach that type of production. Considering D. Sedin will miss some time, I might lean toward Toews, otherwise it comes down to preference.

In my opinion it is a bad idea to over look a good trade because you are aiming to win at some time in the future. Why not make a set of excellent trades now and win next year? Giroux will be good, no question, but Toews and Sedin are good already. You will not be able to dish Giroux at the trade deadline when most of the good deals can be had. That is prime time for improving your team. I would try and increase the quality and quantity of my tradeable assets and move them in times of scarcity and demand like at the trade deadline. Be smart and have a plan, but dont pass up an easy way to improve your team now.

many thanks for the advice, folks. he's stewing on it now. toews' slow start might help me swing this.

if he asks for a draft pick as well, should i be willing to include one? for example, does this trade make sense:

to me: toews, 2010 3nd rounder
to him: giroux, 2010 1st rounder

cheers!

It really depends on what kind of players you could snag with those draft picks. I believe Toews and Giroux have similar upside, but Toews is one year ahead of Giroux. For me the trade wouldn't make too much sense if you had to give up a premier draft pick along with Giroux.
