Hi,
I am in a keeper league where the only goalie stat is save percentage. My draft is coming up tomorrow night and i need some advice. I currently have Vokoun and Turco. Turco has killed me the past couple of years in save percentage so I am looking to cut him and add two goalies. My full team is in my signature below. Available goalies are: Hiller, S. Mason, Anderson, Varlamov, Rinne, Smith, Quick, Emery What is your opinion on who I should take? I am drafting fifth in an 8 team league. Thanks!

I would definitely look at getting rid of Vokoun.
He promised a better start to the season and it didn't happen, so I don't see him performing too strongly this season ... he'll have a lot of ups and downs I'm sure, but I don't like his focus or his game right now ... he gets caught standing up way too much. I would easily take Craig Anderson or Jonas Hiller over Vokoun. Turco has not started as strong as most people like, but now that Alex Auld has won a game, I expect Turco to really snap out of his hazy attitude and really turn it on...he's under some pressure now. Anderson has the best save percentage over the last two years (.928) and this season he's already sitting at .955 which is crazy good. He has already faced like 112 shots in just three games and he's the best player on the Avalanche this season. He will be very solid all year long so long as Budaj actually plays well in his limited starts and they can manage Anderson's minutes without having to depend on him every single game. Get rid of Vokoun and go grab Anderson. If you can't get him, go for Hiller. If you don't want to get Hiller, your next best bet is easily Steve Mason and then Pekka Rinne in that order. You could flop Mason and Hiller as well ... they are both going to be great this year. Personally I would treat Turco as "one last chance" sort of thing where you really watch him closely and spot-start him at home and against teams that come in playing weakly. Hope that helps!!! |

Thanks GG.
Wow!! The last thing I thought you would say is to drop Vokoun and keep Turco. I have had both goalies for 4-5 years, and Vokoun has consistently put me near the top of the league in save % around .920 and Turco has steadily declined to around or under .900. What makes you think Turco will turn around his declining save % performance at his age and that Vokoun will suddenly decline?

Turco Turnaround - http://www.thegoalieguild.com/?p=1477
Vokoun ... well, he's a victim of circumstance. Kind of like why Anderson was able to have such a high save percentage in Florida ... they both face a TON of shots. Anderson was a million times more consistent and this summer the only thing Vokoun cared about was having a strong start......and it didn't happen whatsoever...here is his stat-line for the first three games. Tomas Vokoun 3gp 102sv .895sv% 1-2-0 12ga 4.31gaa 114sa As I've been saying for years, you need to wait until 4-5 games have taken place before really getting a good read on a goalie. I'm pretty sure he will be starting again tonight, so let's see how he's able to bounce back after being pulled last night. Personally I know Vokoun is an up-and-down goalie ... I think this is a down season for him. Without Bouwemeester, his save percentage will be lower than last season alone. |
