I think Kovalchuk is a big upgrade on Gagne long term (and possibly short term as well), and getting rid of Handzus is a bonus since he\'s currently 3rd line and no PP time. I think I would take the deal as you\'re getting the best player.

It\'s pretty close. I like Kovalchuk over Gagne long-term although they could easily be a wash this season given the quality of linemates. I think Lombardi and Handzus might be really close also and Lombardi seems to be getting the better ice time.

It\'s the Prospal part that bugs me some as I think he\'s worth close to 80pts this year [Ruutu\'s a big question mark]. Probably this simply makes the whole thing about even though b/c at the end of the day you recieve the better keeper.

Could go either way. See if he\'ll come down some otherwise pick up Kovalchuk.

First of all the length of your pool does nothing to change my opinion of the trade. When you only get to keep 4 players for the next season you want to try to get the best possible combination of players with the most upside and highest probability of achieving it. All that to say you should still acquire Kovalchuk.

BTW I like the Erat compromise as I think Bouchard and Prospal have a higher probability of hitting the 70-80pt mark this year.
