Shit!! (Theo owner)
In the post game presser, when asked if there was any more clarity around the goaltending situation, Boudreau stated: "No, but I gotta believe that Varly's got a good chance of being it." Here's the link: http://capitals.nhl.tv/team/console Check out my sig. Is it worth keeping Theo around as a handcuff to Varly, or should I drop him?

wow shocking news all summer it was theo gets the nod.. i think this is just taken out of context a bit. i cant see them sitting theo with his 4mil salary. i think theo starts as the starter but if he falters they wont waist time letting him find himself they will go to varlamov.. but once varlamov falters (and it will happen) they go back.
expect some kind of back and forth. i say that bc they need theo to do well since its a contract year and they would love to use him as trade bait.

Watch the video for yourselves, boys.
It is about half way through, just after he talks about having 10 NHL ready defensemen. I agree that it will be a platoon situation and I was jumping for joy when Theo was named the starter, but it looks as though he may not be responding to the challenge as hoped. I'm sure this isn't carved in stone, but it was a direct quote. Not the type of thing to say with the season starting next week if you are not at least seriously leaning in Varly's direction. .

Read the quote more closely:
"No, but I gotta believe that Varly's got a good chance of being it." He hasn't named a starter. He's only saying that he thinks Varlamov's got a decent chance to become the starter.

I don't think any NHL coach would openly name Varlamov the "starter" over Jose Theodore. Varlamov isn't the most solid goalie from a technical standpoint and he's going to have ups and downs this season ... more than you probably expect.
I wouldn't read into the video or Boudreau's quotes too much. Just wait and see what happens next weekend. You can't get caught up in the hype of the media...look at Varlamov from strictly a goaltending point of view. He has very little NHL experience and is still learning a lot about positioning and rebound control. You have to expect him to struggle at some points in the season. Plus, Theodore is going to get some chances to be the team's starter. Every goalie on every team ultimately does. |

Watch the video.
Of course, he did not outright say that Varly is the undisputed #1. However, at the very least this is a pretty big endorsement for him. I haven't heard any positives coming from Boudreau regarding Theodore and this is quite a switch from proclaiming Theo the starter a few weeks ago. Very likely, the statement of a few weeks ago was more political than anything else. It is very obvious that BB has no faith in Theo and was continually frustrated by his inconsistent play last year. Believe me, I was paying close attention as a Theo owner. Getting yanked for the entire playoffs after only one game says a lot IMO. If I was Theodore and my coach's tune has changed from "Theo is our starter" to "I gotta believe that Varlamov has a good chance at being it.." I would be worried.

Okay I watched the video.....
"...EVEN THOUGH I GOTTA BELIEVE VARLY'S GOT A GOOD CHANCE OF BEING HERE." HERE. As in, making the team. There's nothing that he said that even remotely comes close to saying Varlamov is the team's starter. Go back and watch and turn up your volume

He at best hinted that he will have his chance to take the reigns.
