Default Yet Another Draft Analysis

I took a slightly different path this year than last, I'm not sold yet - but it should be an interesting year.

14-team Yahoo H2H with standard cats.

1. (7) Martin Brodeur G
2. (22) Mike Green D
3. (35) Martin St. Louis RW
4. (50) Henrik Sedin C
5. (63) Brad Boyes RW
6. (78) Carey Price G
7. (91) Alex Tanguay LW
8. (106) Paul Kariya LW
9. (119) Scott Gomez C
10.(134) Patrick O'Sullivan LW
11. (147) Tomas Kaberle D
12. (162) Bryan Little RW
13. (175) Ryan Kesler C
14. (190) Alex Goligoski D
15. (203) Tim Connolly C
16. (218) Jaroslav Halak G

Goalies were going fast between the 2nd and 6th rounds and Price was the best available option - I'm not sold on him, but I think he'll have at least a bit of a bounce back. I took Halak with my last pick to handcuff him a little bit if he stumbles out of the gate. I don't like how many times NJ/Mtl will see each other, but you've gotta work with what you've got.

It felt weird picking my first forward in the 3rd round, but overall I'm okay with the results. I don't really like having TB and STL as my core, but once again they were the best available players to fit my needs. I fully expect Connolly to break at some point, but as my 2nd last pick I'm hoping for decent PPG until he drops then I can fill the spot with the WW.

Thoughts?

Price at 78 is a good pick. You say that it felt weird not picking your first forward until the 3rd round, but your got Brodeur, who could easily win you all the goalie cats every week, and Green who is a monster in a league that must start D.

Overall, you are really light on the PIMs. Kelser will be your bet guy in that stat, which is not saying much. You are strong at A, but not so much in G. Green has a fair chance to be your 2nd higest scorer and an excellent chance to come 3rd.

I cant see how you can pass up Brodeur at 7 or Green at 22. I would have likely done the same thing, but I have no idea who else was available obviously.

You will likely win the assists cat every week, your goalies are very strong, but you will struggle with goals, PIMs and maybe +/-.

You will make the playoffs and from there anything can happen.

Have fun,

AW

Yeah overall not a bad team for a 14 teamer.

Green at 22 is a steal, in many leagues he was going in the first round.

You're a bit weak up the middle with Sedin, Gomez, Kesler and Connolly, but there's bound to be a few centers that'll crop up in the season.

LW and RW are decent.

Brodeur and the Montreal combo is great to own.

Overall not a bad job, just keep up with up-to-date news and see if you can keep building on the solid base that you have.

Thanks!

I'm echoing much the same thoughts as you guys - I think with some good WW play I can keep a fairly strong team. I almost had a steal on Ribeiro later in the draft, but he got picked just before I got to him. One of the tougher drafts I've done, it was harder to read people's picks this year.

I'm not super concerned about PIM right now, there are some good blackhorse WW picks, and there wasn't a lot of competition on PIM guys through the draft. I'd definitely like to shore up my C position, but that will just take keeping my eyes open.

One last question - There are some solid PIM option guys out there right now, but I'm not sure I can justify dropping anyone for them yet.

Carcillo should be a solid option, but LW is potentially my strongest F position. I could drop Connolly for him, but I'd really like to hold on to him and see how long he can hold up - he's great when he's healthy and for an end pick I could be very happy.

Perhaps the best thing will be to wait a few weeks into the season and see how things shake out.

I couldn't help but notice significant similarity in our teams. This was a 12 team league though, and it looks like the competition wasn't quite so fierce for mine.

1. (12) Martin Brodeur G
2. (13) Mike Green D
3. (36) Vincent Lecavalier C
4. (37) Thomas Vanek LW
5. (60) Sergei Gonchar D
6. (61) Alex Kovalev RW
7. (84) Ales Hemsky RW
8. (85) Marian Hossa RW
9. (108) Carey Price G
10. (109) Niklas Kronwall D
11. (132) Patrick O'Sullivan LW
12. (133) Paul Kariya LW
13. (156) Patrick Sharp C
14. (157) Kris Letang D
15. (180) Andy McDonald C
16. (181) Tim Connolly C
17. (204) Cam Barker D
18. (205) Jaroslav Halak G
19. (228) Scottie Upshall RW
