Fair enough on Varlamov. For the record, I am not a Varlamov fan and I'm not "huge" on him, but he definitely wouldn't fulfill the requirements of a "sleeping giant." The point is to find a goalie that could be selected in the late rounds of a relatively deep league who could turn into gold. That's why I discounted the likes of Varlamov and Hiller as straight starters, even if it's not quite that clear cut, since they will be treated as such in fantasy drafts.

Halak certainly is interesting... whereas someone like Harding would be pinned to the hope he gets traded, Halak could end up stealing a significant number of starts in his current situation.

pavelec - like someone posted bout the AVs...im not sure youd want the thrashers goalie...but they have improved some defensively - hes definitely someone that can be drafted in the last rd or 2 or is on the WW....came across this trollin on other sites ( i know its hockeybuzz...but the blogs on the site are good ).....http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?p...blogger_id=127
seems the thrashers patience w/ kari has worn thin...and pavelec is someone w/ ability...anway just food for thought

Corey Crawford, Ty Conklin (For 1 yr), Gustavsson
I may be biased, but I firmly believe in Emery's failure...Just like Avery, you can't teach composure or class....Schneider makes his way to philly!

With your Emery impending-implosion view, would you see Boucher as a top backup to own this year?

He's not a top back-up by any stretch of the imagination but IMO one of the goalies to be in a potentially great situation is Yann Danis. It happened to Scott Clemmenson last season and it could be Danis' turn at the 'kick at the can' this season.
Brodeur is no spring chicken. One long term injury to Marty and Danis will have his chance to shine. With Lemaire's defensive system, I can't see why Danis' numbers wouldn't be fairly good. For what it's worth, I can picture Lou Lamoriello going out to get another goalie IF Brodeur were to go down long term. Giguere or Biron might be candidates to take over as starting goalies for New Jersey if Brodeur were to go down for the season. |

How would you guys know when to jump on the <Insert Goalies Name>'s ship?
What are some clear signs? My league's pretty active and I need another goalie, so I would like to be the first one to grab a back-up turned starter goalie

Here are the links on Dobber's site to a 5-part series I wrote for School of Block last year:
It was called "What to Watch For" and answers your exact question =): Part 1 - http://www.dobberhockey.com/index.ph...man&Itemid=100 Part 2 - http://www.dobberhockey.com/index.ph...man&Itemid=100 Part 3 - http://www.dobberhockey.com/index.ph...man&Itemid=100 Part 4 - http://www.dobberhockey.com/index.ph...man&Itemid=100 Part 5 - http://www.dobberhockey.com/index.ph...man&Itemid=100 That should help... Oh and sorry I didn't read any of these previous posts but five backups you absolutely need to keep an eye on this season: 1. Alex Auld 2. Jonas Gustavsson 3. Brian Elliott 4. Jeff Deslauriers 5. Antero Niittymaki |

Ohh crazy so I went back and read the first page of comments.
"Securing Your Sleeping Giants" was written literally two weeks after my 5-part series LOL http://www.dobberhockey.com/index.ph...man&Itemid=100 There you go! I also meant to add Dan Ellis to the other goalies I named. And of course Jaro Halak is worth mentioning as well! |
