Default Who are the top backup goalies for this season?

I remember reading a piece last year by Justin (can't remember if it was an article run on the site or in Dobber's guide) that mentioned the "sleeping giant" (I think that's what he called them). In a nutshell, the top backup goalies to own... and he argued (and I agree) that these goalies are probably more valuable to own in a single season league that counts GAA and SV% than a starter on a very bad team.

So, who are the sleeping giants for this season? Below are a handful that I am targeting as a third goalie...

(note, I am discounting Giguere since he really is a starting goalie whose just stuck behind a better goalie at the moment... looking more for the hidden gems for this)

Jaroslav Halak
Josh Harding
Brian Elliott
Dan Ellis
Ty Conklin

I wonder if some will say Jimmy Howard... I've only seen him in very limited action, and have yet to be impressed. Would like some insight into him (or the Detroit crease in general after Osgood... seems like there is about 30 starts up for grabs there). I'm secretly hoping Detroit makes a trade for Harding!

If you're looking at guys who might not get a ton of starts but should get quality starts then I'd also consider some of these:

Tuukka Rask
Corey Crawford
Mathieu Garon
Erik Ersberg
Brian Boucher

I think the gist of Justin's article (and what I'm looking for) are goalies who are currently backups that could become starting goalies at some point this season... and who will also give quality starts, as you said. Anyway, that's why I did not include someone like Rask on my list.

In that case, you've named some of the obvious choices. I think Ersberg still qualifies as he could easily end up taking the job back from Quick. Anderson will probably do it... then again I'm not sure you want Colorado's starter in any case. A healthy Niittymaki could start in Tampa. DiPietro would (hypothetically) start for the Isles, if you're really desperate!

My sleeper goalie this year is Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers. Khabibulin has been less than stellar in his last few non-contract years and even then he is an older goalie who has only started 60 games once in the last 5 years.

I wouldn't bet my house on Varlamov being the starter. Maybe after half the season has gone by, but not today. Hiller is more of a sure thing, but it's not completely clear there either.

I know how everybody loves Varlamov here but if Theo has a really strong first month or two I think it'll be hard to unseat him. However, if he struggles, then Varlamov will be in for smooth sailing.

I'd also keep an eye out for Halak cause I'm not sure what will happen there if Price starts of the season how he ended last year.
