Default Paul Byron.. Buffalo

What do you think of this guy? He was 4th in scoring in the Q and had a huge playoffs with Claude Giroux the year before. How many years before he makes an impact?

Default Paul Byron.. Buffalo

Not a huge fan of his pedigree being a 6th rounder and all. He\'s another small center in the Buffalo system so you can expect he\'s got an NHL future eventually. First he\'s got to establish himself at the AHL level, I figure 2 years or so, and he\'s got to outduel Gerbe assuming he\'s not already up with the big club and Ennis. Don\'t know a hell of a lot beyond that but to me it smells like another one of those small guys who rips the Q and then doesn\'t produce squat when the competition gets bigger and meaner.

Default Paul Byron.. Buffalo

Saw him play a lot in the Q. He\'s pretty electrifying yet small. I would tend to agree with Metaldude

In a new full 30 team keeper league (points only) I drafted Byron in the 16th of 27 rounds. I think I might have made a mistake.

Dobber has him listed in his 2011 Fantasy Guide as a left wing on the second line with Jokinen and Rene Bourque. Dobber also has him with a point projection of 44 points. This report along with Feasters positive comments led me to see Byron as a great sleeper pick.

I checked Dobber's Prospect Report and found this:

Quote:
Paul Byron, C (TY 102) (LY 402)

Byron is fast becoming a Dobber favorite, due to the unexplainable small/skilled player bias. A high-scoring player in the QMJHL, he had a so-so debut for Portland in 2009-10. But he really built on it this past season and even looked good during his cup of coffee with the Sabres. However, and weve said this a hundred times over the last three years, the Sabres are flush with small, skilled players. From Derek Roy to Tyler Ennis to Nathan Gerbe this team has reached its quota and then some. But Byron is one of those players who thrives despite the odds, so it is unwise to count him out. He'll be a part-timer next season and a full-timer in 2012-13. The Sabres will make room. Somehow.
This was published before Byron got traded to Calgary and clearly Feaster wanted Byron so lets hope he has serious plans for Byron.

This quote was pulled off the Hockey News page.

Quote:
2011/06/26: The Calgary Flames feel that Paul Byron will have an excellent chance to crack the Calgary lineup next season. Byron was acquired from Buffalo on Saturday and should fill one of the Flames big holes at center. "This young man is knocking on the door," Calgary GM Jay Feaster said. "In dealing with Darcy Regier (the Buffalo GM), he somewhat confirmed that. Our guys felt that if it weren't for the fact they already have Nathan Gerbe and Tyler Ennis already playing for them in the NHL, he might be there already. He is a guy we don't have in our organization. A very highly skilled guy. He's a good, fast, quick skater. He's going to be with us for a long time." That's high praise indeed from Feaster. Stay tuned as Byron could be a nice surprise next season. (Source: Calgary Herald)
I picked up the Fantasy Hockey Coach Guide today and Byron did not get a mention in that report. He did not even make the Fantasy Prospect List for Calgary in that report. I checked the Ultimate Fantasy Pool Guide (Magazine) and they do not have Byron making the team and have him listed in the 10th slot on the prospect list.

Well that does not leave me with a lot of confidence that I made a good pick in the 16th round. I just hope that Feaster and Dobber know something that the others don't. I am counting on Feaster's high praise as at least getting Byron a solid look in camp. Since they decided to resign Morrison I don't know where Byron fits in with Backlund, Jokinen, Morrison, Langkow, and Stajan cloging up the center position. Byron is on a two way contract and the others are not. Oh dear I should have done more research like this before drafting Byron. Perhaps as Dobber suggests Byron will get moved to left wing.

Now I picked up James Sheppard in the 20th round so he is my hope to pick up the slack left if Byron does not make the team. Quite frankly at this point it will take a very impressive preseason performance for Byron to make the team. Dam - I have convinced myself that I screwed up on this pick

Yeah guys...he's on the Flames. He has a better opportunity there then he did being on the Sabres.

Good shot at a 50 - 55pt upside, which I suppose could be of value in deeper leagues.

Thanks for the feedback.

I will be happy if Byron makes the team. A 50 point season would far exceed my expectations and certainly make me happy with my 16th round pick.
