wow. well that\'s just plain stupid. yeah... lets concern ourselves with the size of the crease, the goalie pad thickness, visor tint colors, number of fights in a game... but who cares if the goalies wear protection on the most vulnerable part of their body?

that\'s just plain idiotic. Guys can shoot the puck 100 miles an hour, and some goalies rely on blind luck that they don\'t get hit in the throat and get a collapsed windpipe. That\'s the stupidest thing I\'ve ever heard of.

Frankly, I\'m surprised that a goalie hasn\'t died recently from this if this is the case...

i think it\'s really stupid too, it should definitely be mandatory, especially after the malarchuk incident. i am surprised we don\'t see more major incidents with skaters and neck lacerations / trauma as well.

The NHLPA is to blame. They should be looking out for their clients safety. Some of the goalies don\'t like wearing the neck/throat protectors. That\'s too bad. I remember when they finally grandfathered the mandatory wearing of helmets (ok, now I know I\'m getting old), some of the players didn\'t like that either. Sometimes we need rules to protect us from ourselves.

Well put Lanky, it is idiotic that it\'s not a mandatory piece of kit.
