Default Halak or Cloutier?

Yeah I know Clouts sucked big last year, but LA has improved...
Halak did wonders at the end of last season...but Montreal might not be that good this year...
Who would you take a chance on?

Default Re:Halak or Cloutier?

MTL will be near the worst team in the east this year and Huet and Halak may battle back and forth knowing Carboneau. Really no value in Halak that I can see.

Cloutier is a big investment for LA @ $3.1M and he is Crawford\'s boy. However, Labarbera could make a push this time aorund and stick.

That being said I would stand clear of both of them. To give an answer Cloutier has an edge.

Check the save percentages, Cloutier has been a minor league goalie for years. Why is he still in the NHL ?? Does anyone else think the relationship between him and Crawford is a little strange ??

another issue that gives a slight edge to cloutier is the fact that motreal will likely give price a shot if they seem out of it early on , if he\'s as good as many suggest then both hue and halak will suffer .

I agree with coldsquad on that topic. Cloutier might be overrated. On the other hand, to my humble opinion, Halak is highly underrated. Well, some would say that my opinion is biased since I am a huge Habs fans, but however let me explain my point;

He came in mid-February as a 22 year old rookie (because of Huet\'s injury), and his mission was nothing less than saving the Habs season and help them making the playoffs. That was already lots of pressure for a young goalie, mostly when you play in MTL. At the time, he was leading the AHL in the GAA and SO (with Labarbera) and was 2nd in save %. He litterally lifted a team that just had 6 losses in a row before he came in. He was a huge help to get the Habs back in the playoff race. The Habs only needed to win the last season game, but unfortunately Huet was decided to be the starter for that game and the Habs lost and did not make the playoff. Had Halak been the starter, it would have probably been a different story.

To my opinion, he proved at his young age, that he could put up with the pressure. He won 10 of his 16 contests with 2 SO and he was incredible in the Shootouts.

Despite his brilliant last season, he still has to prove how consistent he can be. However, I\'d still choose him over Cloutier.

Being from Canuck-land, I may be biased, but I wouldn\'t go near Cloutier with a 10-foot pole. He got his wins in Vancouver because the team in front of him put up a load of goals, not because he\'s particularly suited to be a starter. Now, it looks as though injuries have taken over his career, and even when he wasn\'t injured in LA he stunk it up. He may begin as a starter because of what he\'s getting paid and because he\'s Crawford\'s secret love child, but he\'ll have to be healthy, consistent, and most of all not suck to keep the job.

In Montreal, Halak is still the back-up, but he should get a reasonable number of games, and there\'ll be no hesitation to start him if Huet fumbles. I don\'t think that there is any worry that Price might jump up and steal the job this season.

I\'d maybe look for other options, but to answer the question I think Halak is the better choice.

Stay clear of both if you can. Are there any other goalies available? Put them up here and compare with a wider aperture.

Here are some of the goalies that are currently available...
We will be bidding on them at our draft at the end of September.
I will not have enough money to go for the obvious ones (ie. Backstrom, Vokoun, Kolzig)...
And I am trying to fill an active goalie spot...otherwise Bernier would be a no-brainer...
Thoughts?

Niklas Backstrom
Tomas Vokoun
Olaf Kolzig
Josh Harding
Jaroslav Halak
Jonathan Bernier
Justin Pogge
Mike Smith
Tuukka Rask
Riku Helenius
Dan Cloutier
Semen Varlamov
Jason Bacashihua
