I\'m looking for some advice for my upcoming draft:
It\'s a 7 team keeper league: 12 skaters, 6 d, 2 goalies, and you can only protect 5 players each year. goals and assists only. I\'ve got 5th and 10th picks. Here is my prtoected list: Martin St. Louis, Datsyuk, Simone Gagne, Gonchar...but my 5th choice I am trying to decide between Gaborick and Lidstrom. Gaborik is an injury risk but could go for 85-100 points but Lidstrom is a rare offensive defensemen. I\'m hoping people might be scared away from Gaborik and maybe i could grab him with my 3rd pick. Thoughts? Post edited by: frost, at: 2007/09/05 18:41 |

well in my 10 team draft, he went in the mid 2nd round. for a 7 team draft id expect hed go early 3rd or late 2nd. either way, he\'s a steal. depends when you\'re drafting....if it\'s the 3rd round and he\'s on the table, get him without hesitation. thats my opinion on the matter.

I hate to say this because I am such a Gagne fan for this year but you might be protecting the wrong winger. Gabbie although high risk has more upside than Gagne. Gagne is prone to miss 6 or 7 games too though.
Anyway - I think with 35 protected players if you cut Gabbie loose you need to be prepared to see him gone pretty quickly in your draft but I guess the same could be said for Lidstrom. If it comes down to Gabbie or Lidstrom for you - it is damn close but I would hang on to Lidstrom (along with Gonchar - he anchors your D for the season). I personally tend to take more risks so my approach with your team would be to protect Gabbie and Lidstrom and hope I replace Gagne readily. Good luck with your draft.

Frost - I\'ve been drinking Shoeless\' koolaid.
I\'d keep both Gabby and Lidstrom and drop Gagne. Lidstrom and Gonchar will give you the best 1-2 Dman punch in the league. Gabby is a top 25 player IF healthy. I\'m not sure there were too many players with a higher points per game average than Gabby last year.

With that said, I would probably not protect Gagne either. I would slot in Lidstrom and Gaborik (and pray the off season rehab worked for him). my two cents.

imo, gagne and gaborik will have similar numbers. gabbie will miss at least as much as gagne if not more (possible waaaay more). if briere and gagne click, he and that first flyers line will be a force to be reckoned with. you can never rule out gagne in these matters, simply because of his goal-scoring ability. if he could post nearly 70 points on a team with no center for a half a year, imagine him paired next to briere for potentially a full season!! 85 points is not out of the question. gaborik, if (and that\'s a major if) he plays a full season should be in the 90\'s, but his health is a big risk. he could end up with 55 points, he could end up with 95 points. id keep gagne....the risk is much lower and the points are comparable. keep gagne, save yourself the headache.
