Starting a brand new keeper. Starting line-up 2L/2C/2R/3Util/4D/2G. G/A (2 pts), PPP/SHG/GWG (1 pt). It looks like I\'m going to be stuck with the 9th pick out of 9, but will get the 10th pick as well. It also means that I won\'t get to pick again until 27/28. My guess is that a starting G can still be had at 27/28, but I\'m stuck on whether or not I should pick up some primo D early (like Whitney).
The reason I\'m considering D so heavily is because the quality drops significantly after the top half dozen or so. The same cannot necessarily be said for forwards. If I\'m picking 9th, likely Crosby, AO, Malkin, Thornton, Heatley, Jagr, Spezza, Lecavalier (off the top of my head) will be gone, and once the top few go it levels out a bit. So, my ultimate question is: am I justified in passing up a 90-point forward (eg: Zetts/Datsyuk) to pick a perrenial 60-point (possibly 70) d-man? Post edited by: Chadosaur, at: 2007/09/05 14:37

drafting a defenseman, no matter how good, is really not worth it until the 3rd round, IMO. i would probably draft datsyuk, hossa or kovalchuk with that pick and pass on the defensemen. there is one really great thing about drafting someone like ryan whitney before anyone else does: trade bait. if you tack a nice pick onto him and ship him off for a 1st round forward, you\'re in business. you probably won\'t have that option if you pass on him until the later rounds. 9still, i think datsyuk (or someone of his caliber....like jokinen or iginla) is more worthy of a 1/2 round pick. just my thoughts....

I think for your 1st pick, you gotta take a top tier forward. Depending on whos left, I would either take another top tier forward with you 10th pick or take a goalie, maybe Lundqvist. With your 27-28th pick, there should still be some top tier defencemen.

you list ppp, shg, gwg as earning points. this immediately indicates the need to have a forward with your first pick.

I have to go with the consensus opinion on this. I think you can get 2 fairly decent forwards with the 9th and 10th picks that will help you along the way. If you don\'t get a top notch D-man, try getting a core of reliable 2nd tier defensemen to compensate. I think that the better your forwards are the better your team will be so take forwards with your first picks

You guys are quick...thanks!
I\'ve been thinking about this non-stop for the past hour, and I think it\'s probably correct to take a forward. What I may actually do is look to specifically pick a centre with 9/10 and make a play for Crosby right off the bat, but we\'ll see. Most of the guys in the pool are pretty savvy, so I don\'t think I\'m going to be able to get away with any draft-day-hangover shenanigans.

The draft day hangover I\'m talking about is once the draft is finished and everyone looks at their team. They immediately see the holes they left in their line-up, begin regretting what they\'ve just done, and start scrambling to patch up what they see as damage. That is the draft day hangover.
The hangover shenanigans come in when I realize that the hangover has set in (hopefully for the Crosby owner), and I begin stirring the pot to come up with a steal of a trade. It\'s exactly the same as getting really drunk one night, feeling like garbage and regretting it in the morning, calling around to apologize to everyone you know, then your buddies come over to make fun of you and rub salt in the wounds. Loudly. Except in hockey pool form. So Crosby owner realizes that he\'s ended up with Raycroft/Leclaire in goal...or something equally disturbing. He thinks \"oh crap...my goaltending sucks ass...I\'m going to be left behind if I don\'t shore it up\". That\'s when I say to him \"wow buddy...too bad you can\'t dress Crosby in goal\". He has a bit of a spazz and starts looking for depth among the remaining GM\'s. I\'ve stolen Lehtonen (or whoever) in a middle round as my 2nd G, so I say to him \"check out the talent on Lehtonen\"...like he\'s the next coming of christ...\"but of course I could never part with such a player\". Hooked. I then say to him \"look...if you want me to screw with my G depth, it\'s gonna cost you Crosby, but I\'ll also throw in Jokinen/Briere/whichever-centre-I-picked-late-first so you\'ll still be good at centre\". And that\'s what I call a shenanigan. P.S. - if anyone in my pool is clued in to Dobber and recognizes me, I\'m making this whole thing up.
