The second Backstrom falters, Harding will steal the job. If Minny were smart, they would move Backstrom for some scoring help at the deadline.
I disagree, a smart team doesn\'t trade away a proven goalie the second a young guy steps up. They wait a season until the younger guy is absolutely comfortable and ready to go before they dish the older goalie.

I think you\'ll see backstrom get traded at some point in the middle of the 2008-09 season to a team in need of goaltending help. That team will then sign him to an extension for a three or more years if possible.

That\'s my prediction. The worst thing a team can do is throw a young player (especially a goalie) into the deep end too soon. Keeping backstrom for an extra year will keep that from happening.
I agree...somewhat...However, I\'m sure they could get a veteran back up at the deadline. If Harding\'s ready.....play him...

I never said don\'t play him.

I was just saying not to dish Backstrom.

Why go after a backup at the deadline (giving up picks and or prospects) when they can keep backstrom for free and use him as a backup? I think Harding will be the starter (or the better half of the tandem) by the end of this year, and I think he\'ll be the starter, but trading backstrom just doesn\'t make any sense if they need a decent backup (just in case) anyways.

It\'s not like his 3 million cap hit is really hurting them...

The games should be slit 50/30 this year. Harding is going to be a star goalie in this league, but the Wild have no reason to move him. They are deep at forward, solid on defense, and stocked for prospects.

In my mind, Iwas thinking a package deal...Backstrom for second line scoring help + a UFA veteran backup....all in the same deal.
