Default Help with new League Rules

Hey there, great site

Just changing our fantasy league to a Keeper with salary cap and need some advise. Here are the details:

* 20 man active roster + 5 Bench
* CAPS = $440 & 45 Years in player contracts at all times
* Max 3 Year contracts
* Auction draft
* Points League
* 10 teams

Looking for advise on:

1) How do I work free agents / waivers. My thought is a weekly deadline where guys can bid on FA\'s. If guys drop a player they incur a salary cap hit on the contracted player ? This seems like it will discourage any player movement ? What percentage should the cap hit be ?

2) At the end of the year, do I keep that cap hit in place as guys trim their rosters for the next year ?

3) With this being the first year, and auction style draft for 25 players, any suggestions on making the draft run smoothly.....could take a long time ?

Thanks

Can a guy drop a player under contract? Seems like that should not be allowed...
Free agency/waiver wire...I\'m just brainstorming here, but what if it was allowed, but would have to fit under their cap? The more responsible owners would leave enough room for four or five signings per season.
Yes, definitely set a weekly deadline.

Start the draft early and do it piecewise. A few rounds one day, a few rounds a week later. Auction drafts take forever, I don\'t have enough experience in them to offer suggestions to hurry it along...

I\'m in a couple of keeper leagues and in both of them you can release your guy under contract but you are responsible for 50% of the salary until the contract ends. This makes you think twice about the length of the signing, particulary when dealing with an unknown commodity or a player nearing the twilight years.

Having said that there is a one week waiting period where other owners may choose to pick them up and if somehow they pass \"waivers\" then you may pick him back up in two weeks time once again paying his full salary.

This discourages owners for signing everybody to three years. Like Dobber said responsible owners will plan for such occasions. The added benefit is that if you need to free up money you can do that by dropping players and freeing up that money which may allow you to bid on another player, however taking the chance that you may lose him to another team next week. BTW when that other team picks up the player they are now responsible for the full salary and you are free. I think mixing that with a free agent draft mixes it up quite nicely....FA vs known comodity. Could be interesting!

Each team has a released list which doesn\'t count against the total players and bench however it counts against the total salary cap.

As for the deadline ya gotta have one. we do it sundays. It makes it nice as some \"other\" fantasy sites run a monday to sunday review of the upcoming week so it jives nicely..... if you are so inclined to use something in addition to Dobber!

One idea to help speed up the auction is that you set a bidding order with the owners, Jim, Bob, Dave; Jim, Bob, Dave, etc. Then an owner brings up a players name and minimum bid. The bidding continues around the table in order (Jim, Bob, Dave, etc). If you don\'t raise the bid by at least one dollar, you are out of the bidding on that player. That way you quickly eliminate those that aren\'t interested and focus only on the guys that are serious about the player.

Great feedback, its appreciated.

Any thoughts on the Cap of 45 contract years for 25 players ? Too low or high ?

Also, any one use a rookie draft and minor league team system ? How many rounds is the draft and what are the stipulations to signing these guys to contracts ?

We use a 2 year/player cap. 20 players 40 years. It seems to get enough players moving through free agency each year so that you\'re not getting a dry year with no one available. The auction idea for waiver wires is great if there\'s a way to keep the commish out of it. I know CBS does it for you. Each team has $100 to spend through the year, once you use it up you can\'t pick up any more players.
I was in one where there was dispute over having to submit your fa bid to the commish who was also part of the league. It was felt there was an advantage (justly or not) for the commish to see who was worth what to other players.

We have two minor league spots. You can keep a guy in the minors for a max two years before you have to sign him or cut him. We hold a prospect draft each year consisting of one round featuring only the guys from the entry draft. Good Luck

I like the 2 years and sign him / drop him for rookies, but only having 2 spots for rookies I am not sure of. I was thinking having a 3-5 round draft each year for guys just drafted or with less than 10 games played in the NHL

OK, great feedback everyone.....now I am just trying to hammer out rules for FA\'s

Dobber\'s post above lead me to this.......

Increase the total bench spots (say from 5 to 10), which would allow guys to add F/A\'s through the year (if they fit under the cap).
If a GM chooses to drop a player to add another, they will take a cap hit as per bellow:
Current year contract - 50% if before allstar break, 100% if after
Remaining year contract - 50% of salary

Any feedback or suggestions are welcome

Sure the deeper the better and more challenging. That\'s just what we used but it would work with more players. With more players though I would maybe go three years before you have to make a decision.

As for the cap hit question, I think that should work. It may ahve to be a work in progress...see how much movement there is during the first year. Get a gauge from the other owners you can always tweak it for next year.

Good Luck
