Hey guys, Im starting a keeper league this year and Im working on the rules from a lot of the guides posted on this site. First a thank you to all that have shared their own rules. Much appreciated and a big help. What im finding a little difficult to set rules on is if a GM decides not to be a part of the league anymore, what to do with the team and the keepers in place if a new owner does not want that team but decides to start his own...Im hoping maybe some have other opinions on what to do with that or have alternative ways of handling it.

I\'d just roll them back into the draft for the coming year and give the new guy joining first overall pick. How does your system work? Is the team that bad that it would be more beneficial to join via expansion draft?

A newly hired GM in the NHL does not get to say \"actually, I don\'t like these players.\" He can do what he likes once the team is his, but it\'s take it or leave it until he arrives.
You don\'t want anybody in your league who will drop out after a bad year or some retirements. If he\'s not willing, then perhaps it\'s a sign that you are better off without him.

I was thinking the same thing about having the new owner accept the team that is available and work it from there. And if a new owner could not be found then have the players go back into the list of available players.
This is my first one that im doing or have been involved in, but we thought of having 20 players on the roster and keeping 6 at the end of the year with a max of 3 seasons for the keepers. |

We auction off the team to the highest bidder, with the previous owner pocketing the proceeds - just like in the NHL. That is also a motivation for the owner to not tank and help his buddies before he goes - his team would make him less money. Teams go for several hundred bucks, depending on how good they are.

thats an interesting way dobber, thanks, I will definitely think about that one.
Another thought just came to me while I was reading over my rules and something else I need to address, hoping someone could shed some light. Since I have it set for a max number of years a keeper is held, that being 3. If a keeper is involved in a trade, do you think the new owner should have that maximum reset back to 3 if lets say the previous owner is in his second or final season with that player? or should the new owner only have the time remaining on the players \"contract\"? but then whats the benefit in acquiring him if I go with the second choice? |

auction the team off as is. A better quality team would get more in an auction therefore encouraging a GM to keep a solid team so that when they do decide to move on they get the most for their team by having a quality team. I don\'t think you can just throw the players back into the mix as that could give the 1st overall pick a huge advantage at a player that should have been protected. That would make that years draft more valuable because players that should have been protect were not. Just my opinion if a ownership changes hands players stay on that team.

2 other quick points
1. if you can\'t find an owner, maybe perhaps pick 2 or 4 current owners to run the team for a year (basically drafting and dressing a line-up, no trading) to give you more time to find a new owner and then if after one year you can\'t find a new owner then place the player into a dispersal draft. You might be able to find an owner mid season who could take over at that point. 2. I would say time starts over, since its a new team that player went too so the time should start over |

vox,
I would suggest keeping the guys contract where it is in trades....brings a more real NHL aspect to it. what is your cap limit in the league, and are guys allowed to drop and pickup guys as often as they would like ?

I would definitely keep contracts as is, because if you extend them, it defeats the purpose of having contracts that expire. Any smart GM would trade his star player for another star player before the contract expires. If you do this each time before the contract expires, you can hold on to one star or another forever, which is definitely contrary to the intent of your rule.
