Default Auction Draft

Let me start by saying this is a great site, I just found it the other day.

I have been running a couple of Keeper pools the past few years. And often do a Block pool for the guys at work and my volunteer firehall. I have heard of an Auction draft pool and thought about setting up one.

I\'m not quite sure how it works though. I know your given a budget, (ie $20.00) to purchase your roster say 15 players.
1. How is the order of the players to be bid on decided? Pre-determended or chosen by the poolies in a draft order then bid on.
2. Is there a minimum bid usually, a mamimum bid?

One more question, I don\'t know some of the \"poolie lingo\" what is a H2H (head to head?) pool. The pools I have been in just use straight points (goals and assists)for Fwds and D-men, wins, OT loss & SO for goalies.

Thanks You\'ll be hearing more from me, on what is now one of my favorite hockey info sites.

Default Re:Auction Draft

I am in a couple pools that use the auction format. Our salary cap is usually $25.00 and the roster would be 12 forwards... 6 defense.. 2 goalies
The minimum bid is .10 cents, and there is no maximum bid. Players are bid this way...you just pick a starting point \"ie\" Joe.... Joe then nominates any player he wishes for what ever price he wishes \" Heatley, 2 dollars\"
then the bidding escalates from there until the auctioneer says once twice sold to \" Bob\" for $ 4.70\" Then the next guy nominates a player and the process repeats itself. Any player who is nominated, and no one bids on, automatically belongs to the person who nominated him for .10 cents, so don\'t nominate a player you would not take on your team, unless you know that someone else would bid at least .20 cents for. Strategy does come into play however, because you may have a couple of sleeper picks in mind, and want to get them as cheaply as possible, so after everone has exhausted their money supply you can then nominate your sleeper pick and hopefully get him for dirt cheap.
After everyone has filled out their rosters, we then have a supplemental draft for our benches, and this draft goes in reverse order of the prospect draft, and these players will not have salaries attached to them, so in a keeper league, all players that were chosen in the supplemental draft, go back into the draft the next year... your bench is a max of 10 players..... 6 forward/ 3 d/ 1 goalie
Hope this helps....I really like the auction format because when star players do become available....it isn\'t the luck of the draw who gets him...everyone has the same chance...however if a guy decides to spend 10 dollars just to get Crosby...chances are he isn\'t winning anything, as the rest of his team probably will suck, because you will find that scoring D-men go for high dollars, as do Goalies...depending on your scoring system
I\'d rather a Heatley for $ 4.70 and a Thornton for $ 4.90 than one Crosby for 10.00

I\'ve never done an auction draft, but it sounds like fun.

Welcome Nuckfan!

To answer your questions first. For the first year, you draw all the names of the owners at random to determine the order for player nominations. You follow that order until all your positions are filled. For example; round 1 Joe, Al, Bill, round 2 Joe, Al, Bill, etc

As for the money, I\'ve never enjoyed/appreciated $1.75 or $2.40 for a player. I would prefer to use an average salary in even dollar increments. For example, use an average of $10 per position. If you have 20 positions (12-6-2 works well) that you want the money to count against, then everyone starts out with $200. If you want a 5 man reserve list and the salary counts, then $250. Keep the math simple. Make the minimum bid $1 automatic when the player is nominated. Bidding by at least $1 increments, no $1.25, $1.35, you\'ll be there all night!

No max bid, BUT you would have to ensure that the person bidding has enough money to bid at least $1 on his remaining positions.

I\'ve been working on perfecting( ) some rules for my ultimate auction keeper pool. A while back I submitted the rules to Dobber and I think they will be posted under the \"Starting a Pool\" tab on your left.

Some of the more interesting rules include players drafted are under contract for three years and then become \"Restricted Free Agents\". When the player becomes an RFA, all the other owners can bid on him, except for the guy who owns that players rights. After the highest bid is reached, the owner of the players rights can match and retain the player or let him go to the highest bidder and receive a compensatory draft pick depending on the salary the player was signed for.

I would include a Farm Team for prospects and a separate prospects draft. You would have x number of years to \"sign\" a prospect or they go back into the pool. Free Agent Pick ups would cost $1 to sign and automatically be RFA at the end of the year.

The beauty of having \"contracts\" is that you as an owner would be able to keep any player you want and they would achieve \"market value\" every three years. It also adds another dimension of strategy.

An auction pool allows you to mess with other owners, especially if you know that they have an unhealthy affection for certain players. You can bid them up as far as you dare and make sure they spend as much as possible, thereby making them a TB Lightning clone - spend all your money on three players.

Sorry the post is so long, but you\'ve hit on something I have been trying to make happen for several years. The problem for me is I already have tapped out my area and most of the poolies I know are in MY other pools and don\'t want to get into another \"high maintenance\" pool.

Good luck to you!

I like that version too Comish.... I really like the auction drafts, and players having a contract. The only trouble I find with Auction drafts, is you pretty well have to be there in person. What area are you starting your pool in?? If there was a way to do it online...I\'d be in...

I would love to try one of these drafts one day, it looks like a very fun way to run it for a one year league.

If I didn\'t live in such a small city I think it would be more doable to find enough guys to pull it off.

Definitely agree with you regarding being there in person. That\'s really been the only thing holding me back. I have thought about holding an auction via MSN Messenger over several days.

In the pools I currently run, we still hold the draft in person for those still in Ottawa. For those of us who are not currently in the Ottawa area (about 4-5 out of 12), we have MSN Messenger up and running along with our live draft. It\'s worked pretty well for the last 3 years.
