Default Quantity vs Quality?

Hey guys, im contemplating making a pretty reficulous offer, but i have a quesiton first... At what point do you think that Quantity for quality backfires? I know that usually quantity for quality is the way to go, but how many depth players for one superstar can you afford to give up?

depends on how many players you can ,or can\'t protect.

Hello typo and smoothfun:

I have been involved in a few of these. The first time was for a player that I really liked. The second time was for team depth, I gave up the star. In both instances I gave up guys that I would like to have kept but you have to give up something in order to get something back. What you give up, or how many, is really dependant on your situation. Will Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin, Thornton, win you the pool? Can you afford to give up your good players for the star and still field a quality lineup? At the end of the day, you will probably have to provide more info for a specific opinion. I don\'t think that I have told you anything that you didn\'t already know. I always liked being involved in those deals. It certainly gets everyone\'s attention in your pool. Good luck with it. Let us know how it sorts out.

Quantity for quality never backfires. However if the quality in the quantity becomes greater than the quality being received - then you lose (this only relates to a quality assessment for your team not the other guys). Always measure quality vs quality.

LOL shoeless I love your posts, but didn\'t you just tell him not to trade more talent to receive less talent? You should work in politics man, nobody could disagree with that!

RE: the original question... I don\'t think you can really quantify this one. Trust your judgment - you should know it when you see it. I try to keep two things in mind: (1) what is my timeline for winning, and if it\'s not immediate how much will the other players be worth when that time comes; and (2) how sure am I of that evaluation (i.e., if I am trading a group of prospects, how sure-fire are they to reach their upsides)?

If you\'re getting a truly elite talent in return, it\'s almost always worth it.

Shut up Giraffe - I had this nice long erudite post prepared in respond and the forum locked up on me and I lost it - being tired I cobbled together a synopsis - only to have old hawkeye Theiving Giraffe spot the obvious inanity.

I heartily agree with and like your explanation much more than mine for clarity. Most involved GM\'s can feel when the trade scale starts to tilt the wrong way - that \"feel\" is based on many things, but certainly there is a large factor given to knowing your team and league. To come to this forum and ask advice on such deals is okay - but trusting your own judgement is a must at the end of the day.

Hockeylifer is right when he says - to get a good assessment of a trade offer here - you really need to produce a ton of information.
