Hey guys, need your help please. I\'ve been coming to this site since just before the change to the new format, i\'ve tried to help as many people as i can with the little knowledge that i posses. now, i need as much help as i can get. here\'s my situation, just over a month ago a post came thru here asking for a new GM to join their league, i did, it will be my 1st year in a H2H format but they have a twist, in the playoffs you play against 2 other teams not 1. i have been working my but off to get the team i inherited ready for the season, i need your advice to tell me if the makeup of the guys i have will be alright. i think they should be but as i haven\'t done this type of scoring system i\'m still unsure of my chances as some of the teams are real solid. i\'ll give the scoring system and the old and new team for info. thanx to anyone who takes the time to help, very much appreciated.
Scoring System F/D_____________________G G-25___________________W-50 A-25_________________SOL-25 PM-3___________________G-25 GWG-5_________________SV-2 PPG-10________________PM-3 SHG-20________________SO-50 SoG-2_________________GA- -15 OTG-5_________________GP-1 GP-1 HT-10 here\'s the old team and the new team, did i make some bad decisions, don\'t think so but i\'m not 100% sure. Old Team__________________________New Team Lineup Ray Whitney_______________________Ray Whitney Weight____________________________Weight Demitra___________________________Demitra Doan______________________________E.Staal Yashin____________________________J.Staal Stillman__________________________Stillman Prospal___________________________Zajac Nagy______________________________A.Hilbert Cleary____________________________Cleary Axelsson__________________________Thoresen Radivojevic_______________________Radivojevic Nedved____________________________Sterling J.Lundqvist_______________________J.Lundqvist Ponikarovsky______________________Downie R.Niedermeyer______________Marcel Hossa Hamrlik___________________________Hamrlik B.Clark___________________________Poti Kalinin___________________________Kalinin Robidas___________________________Smid Hutchinson________________________Schultz Niinima___________________________Russell Berard____________________________Berard Yemelin___________________________Pollock Tanabe____________________________Tanabe Boynton____________________empty roster spot N.Backstrom_______________________Ward Khabibulin________________________P.LeClair Prospects Hanzal____________________________Pogge Turris____________________________Goligoski Eller_____________________________Eller Mayarov___________________________Neuvirth Perron____________________________Denny Draft Picks(only have 3 rnds) 1st,1st___________________________1st,1st no 2nd____________________________2nd,2nd,2/3rd(FC so its uncertain) 3rd(in a FC)______________________3rd(in a FC) FC- future considerations so from what it looks like i have made some major improvements but the thing i don\'t have a grasp of is how much all these scoring categories will affect the final outcome. i have players that aren\'t on the greatest teams. i have a weak D still. i lost all my good prospects upgrading the front lines. lots of questions and as i haven\'t been thru a season yet a lot of uncertainty. any suggestions as to what i might do to improve or if you think this lineup shud be competitive(i think so) wud be great. as the season gets closer i was hoping to be all set for it, am i? once again thanks for any input you guys have.

Flyer,
Im kinda wondering what is still available but with the depth and roster size you have im assuming not much. But first of all i can see why this team was inherited by you, theres alot of work to be done. The scoring system seems to be ok for players as goals dont completly over weight assists, as they are the same, minus ppgs and shgs. It looks to me like goalie stats are quite high, i dont know if youve done any caculations and compared but a good goalie might be a great investement, maybe grad an Al Montoya or something before he breaks out, but im not sure who your competitors are and how deep they know things. Your forwards are fair, much better than when you started, but should hold up in a pool this size. Looking at your goalies: backstrom for ward, i dont know i guess if you think ward is goign to bounce back this year, i like backstrom alot better but with pogge coming up soon you should be fine. Your right in the last category though, your D is not great at all. You top scoring D man might be 20th in D scoring at best. Id really try to make a move for a top 10 guy, Ive never seen anyone win a pool, or be at the top with a poor defensive core. Well thats all I can see for now, youve clearly made some good moves, but work or that defence, there has to be some sucker out there who who rather a 65 pt forward than a 45 pt D on their team. Best of luck, dcarr |

Looks like you\'ve done a lot of good work. I really like that you picked up the Staal brothers. Long-term I like Downie and Russell, good job getting them. IMO opinion though, you\'ve downgraded your goaltending significantly. Playing in Minny, Backstrom should be able to post excellent numbers for the next couple years at least. And though Khabibulin has taken a step back since joining the Hawks, his numbers should improve as their young talent improves. Leclair is injury-prone and stuck on a CBJ team that is spinning its wheels. If you can upgrade your goaltending, that would be a good move. Also if you can unload Tanabe for a better D-man, that would be good.
Overall great job though, I do think you\'ve improved the team since taking over, no doubt about it.

Another couple thoughts: Poti was a great pick-up. Manning the PP point with Ovechkin and friends should lead to a rise for him. Berard is a big question mark right now, as he still hasn\'t signed with him. If he doesn\'t find a home soon I\'d look at unloading him for someone who\'s at least playing.

thanks for the replies, much appreciated. ya the defense has been a hard one to fix as the others know how important they are and seem to be holding onto any of thwe good ones(and even the ones not so good) with both hands. as for my goaltending, ya it was pretty solid for a while there but i had to use backstrom as the main piece that landed me j.staal and then in turn e.staal. now it\'s a matter of trying to replace the loss. still got some time tho to see what shakes down. thnx again for the replies.

Flyer - I can see the transformation starting to happen.
You weren\'t given a whole lot to start with but I can see the building blocks. Nice work on the Staal Bros (raw deal at the bachelor party but that\'s another post. I donn\'t think it\'s going to happen for you this year so keep moving the older players after a hot streak for the prospects. Your team will mature together and then you\'ll have them by the balls. Some pieces still to move... Ray Whitney, Weight, Demitra Good luck.

Flyer...excellent job revamping your team and putting your fingerprints all over it. Just a thought though, i think you need to pick up someone along the lines of say....a Ducks forward perhaps, possibly with a young flyer Dman type player complimenting your roster...you should talk to the GM that might have these players and pay a premium to finalize your roster
![]() j/k Been watching your moves since you joined, and to say i am impressed would be an understatement. Keep it up and good luck with the upcoming season. As for your roster, Goal scorers and Goalies are a premium, and can be diffucult to get. Keep an eye on guys that make their respective teams or making waves in pre-season and see about picking them up to replace some of the scrubs on your team. Patience and persevereance both pay off. Just remember for the playoffs tho, league playoff take place during the NHL (end of) regular season, keep an eye on 2nd half bloomers that get reported here and elsewhere, the cluth guys that will help you in the stretch run and maximize your scoring potential. Daily roster moves help greatly as well.

I think you need to keep doing what you have been doing. Rebuilding a team is hard and pretty constant work. Will your team be competitive? - no idea cause didn\'t read how many teams are in the league or what their make up is - but it is almost an irrelevant question for a guy like you because you aren\'t going to rest anyway. You also need a little luck to come your way - guys like Whitney and Berard could bonus you big time with good starts and solid production. Make sure to read the back pages of the FA list - there is almost always at least one guy stuck back there that everyone is missing - make sure to scoop him before he comes out of hiding.
Sounds like you are having fun with the challenge and maybe that is the most important thing to do - keep having fun - if you do - the performance of your team will climb - guaranteed.

I\'m going to echo the most common sentiment of this thread, you\'ve done a good job so far. I dont think you have a team that\'s going to compete, unless this is a really big pool, and even then as good a job as you have done I think you have too many glaring weaknesses. Namely your defense and goaltending are shallow at best and shoddy at worst. Your, forwards, the best part of your team are also shallow but you\'ve got some good foundations in place. I also dont think you have many real good prospects waiting in the wings. I\'m going to suggest that you rid yourself Weight, Demitra, Hamrlik, Whitney, Stillman in trades for younger players. I would also try and move cleary as I dont think he\'s gonna do any better, ever, than he did last year. I think you should troll the waivers for replacements for radivojevic and thoressen as well as a couple of your d-men. Build for next year or the year after, you\'d need everything to go perfectly to contend this year.

thnx for the input guys, guess i didn\'t explain as well as i thot i did. here\'s a bit more info that might help.
22 teams altogether. 27 man roster(20 active, 7 bench) 5 man prospect bench( up to 50 nhl games) 3 rounds of draft picks( these can be used to draft kids or take a player not protected from another team, no more than 3 players may be taken from any team) 16 man protection list. now for some answers. yes i have been having a ton of fun. this pool has consumed a lot of time trying to find players, missing prospects or anything that might resemble an FA. you can see by the size of the teams and rosters that anything left in the FA market is named Laraque or Brashear lol. i have been trying to deal my ageing forwards since the day i got this team, these guys are all pretty much vets(some visit here) and won\'t take on a 35 yr old guy easily. my only hope was to unload an older player with a younger one, hasn\'t gone so well either. a lot of the same response \" i need a player back who is similar age\". so i did what i had to, unloaded all my prospectable youth for as much youthful talent as i cud. now all i figure i can do is hope that the vets play well and that as the deadline approaches maybe some new interest will be sparked. my plan was to be a contender within a couple years. even as bad as the original team looked it placed around 9th i think last year(been a bit since i looked). from the feedback it sounds like i will be staying the course, hope i can unload some vets for a better goalie, some better D and maybe another young forward or 2. thanx again for all the help and input, much appreciated. missed one other thing, this will be the pools 3rd year so most of the prospects have been gone over fairly well. thnx again for anything else you can add to this. the brain is cramping a bit and i feel like i\'m trying to almost force moves now so maybe i shud let time take over and go with the flow.
