Default H2H Payout Suggestions

My friends and I are trying to nail down a payout structure for our H2H league this coming season. Some of us only want to reward the playoff winners because that\'s what we\'re playing for, to be the winner at the end. However, some feel that most of the work is done during the regular season and there should also be a reward for that as well. Could I get some suggestions of what works for others out there?

Thanks!

it would be cool to reward the team that finishes in 1st place in your reg season somehow -perhaps 25% of the pot

This is how I set the payout for my 14 team, 21 man roster (7 keepers), h2h league:

1st place of regular season = 15%
1st place of Championship bracket = 50%
2nd place of Championship bracket = 25%
3rd place of Championship bracket = 10%
1st place of Consolation bracket = 1st overall draft pick
2nd place of Consolation bracket = 2nd overall draft pick

I was considering increasing the \'1st place reg season\' payout to 20 or 25% because this achievement does indeed merit the reward. However, we use yahoo... thus 1st place overall gets a buy to semi-final... which gives him/her a 75% chance at an additional payout (4th place receives \'nada\').

Additionally i reward consolation winner and finalist with the top two (re)draft picks... this accomplishes two things: first, concentrates winnings to the REAL winners; second, keeps the bottom half of the pool competitive (no reward for \"dogging it\&quot.

The remaining draft picks are distributed like this:
1st pick – winner of consolation bracket playoff
2nd pick – 2nd place in consolation bracket playoffs
3rd pick – 14th place in regular season
4th pick – 13th place in regular season
5th pick – 5th place in consolation bracket playoffs
6th pick – 6th place in consolation bracket playoffs
7th pick – 3rd place in consolation bracket playoffs
8th pick – 4th place in consolation bracket playoffs
9th pick – 5th place in championship bracket playoffs
10th pick – 6th place in championship bracket playoffs
11th pick – 4th place in championship bracket playoffs
12th pick – 3rd place in championship bracket playoffs
13th pick - 2nd place in championship bracket playoffs
14th pick - 1st place in championship bracket (league champion)

What do think? Any suggestions? I\'m always looking to improve.

We used to pay out the top 3 teams, but we are actually changing our payout structure for the 07/08 season.

It\'s a 16 team H2H keeper (with a salary cap) league. There are 4 divisions of 4 and we play a full 82 game schedule over the course of the \"regular\" season. We run our \"regular\" season until about the 1st week of March. At that time the 4 divisional champions and the next 4 teams with the most pts enter the fantasy playoffs. The remaining 8 teams are placed into a consolation bracket.

League fees will be split into 3 prize pools: 60% for top 3 \'regular\' season placement, 20% for the top 3 fantasy placing and 20% for a straight points pool with our surviving roster for the actual NHL playoffs.

We decided to place emphasis on the \'regular\' season since H2H can get random near the end of the NHL season with teams resting some players in April - additionally, the teams that win in the regular season tend to win in the fantasy playoffs too.

We added the NHL pts pool prize to discourage some of the dumping that has been happening once teams are out of the running for the regular season.

Draft order is:
Teams finishing in the bottom 8 enter a lottery for draft picks 1-8
Teams from the fantasy playoffs finishing 4th to 8th enter a lottery for picks 9-13.
Teams finishing 3rd, 2nd, and 1st are assigned picks 14,15, and 16 respectively.

walter sobchak: I love the idea of rewarding draft picks to consolation place finishers. I would much rather people trying to win something at the end of the year than tanking their team to get a high draft pick when they know they aren\'t in the money.

Cheers!

Jaybo:
rewarding the consolation finalist with high draft picks works with smaller pool sizes (10,12,14) because you\'re still rewarding a team from the bottom half of the league. However, this doesn\'t work very well if your pool size is 20... in this situation you would be rewarding the 7th best team in the pool while the 20th place team is really desperate for the 1st pick.

Default Re:H2H Payout Suggestions

This is what we do.

12 team H2H. 3 divisions of 4 teams each. We host with CBS.

$50 per team buy-in, includes CBS fee of approx $100. The $50 is our sweet spot in terms of it allows for nice prizes without getting into the realm of one playoff series is worth like $300 or something. We\'re all friends in real-life so it can\'t get into \"you stole $400 from me with this trade\", etc. We feel an obligation to keep it to an amount that everyone is comfortable basically giving away. I mean $50 is a 360 game or a nice bite to eat and a night at the pub but it\'s not going to prevent people from paying their rent or putting gas in the truck.

$600 - $100 = $500 for prizes. Half of the money goes to regular season, half to playoffs. So $250 to each.

Regular season best record - $125
Regular season division winner w/ 2nd best record - $75
Regular season division winnder w/ 3rd best record - $50

It\'s been discussed just changing this to $150/$100 but people like the idea of 3 teams winning money in the reg season, so it is what it is.

8 teams make the playoffs, no byes. The 4 teams with the worst records go into a consolation bracket.

3 teams also win money in the playoffs.

Playoff champion - $125
Playoff runner-up - $75
Consolation winner - $50

Of course, there are draft picks to consider. Here\'s how we do the draft picks.

We give the #1 pick to the 2nd round consolation loser. Basically meaning you have to actively try to win your 1st round consolation series and then you either get the #1 pick in the draft or your $50 entry fee back. This effectively discourages tanking. Yes, you can tank the 2nd round consolation series to get the #1 pick but most people would like $50 more than a theoretical #1 pick.

Theoretical draft order:

#1 - 2nd round consolation loser
#2 - 1st round consolation loser with worst record
#3 - 1st round consolation loser with best record
#4 - X - Playoff teams who win no money, worst to best record
#X - Team who wins $50, non-playoff team first
#X - Team who wins $50, reg season #3 if not making playoff finals
#X - Teams who win $75, $125, $150, $200, $250, etc. Tie-breakers are total amount of money won and then whether it is won in playoffs or reg season.

For example:

Team A wins $125 for best regular season record and $75 for playoff runner-up.

Team B wins $75 for second best regular season and $125 for playoff champion

Team C wins $50 for 3rd best reg season

Team D wins $50 for consolation

Draft picks would be as follows:

#1 - 2nd round consolation loser
#2 - 1st round consolation loser with worst record
#3 - 1st round consolation loser with best record
#4-8 - Playoff teams who win no money, worst to best record
#9 - Consolation winner, $50
#10 - Reg season #3, $50
#11 - Team A, $200, Reg season champ and playoff runner-up
#12 - Team B, $200, Playoff champ and regular season runner-up

The reason Team B picks last is because winning the playoffs is treated similarly to winning the Cup, as in a tie-breaker always means that the team who went further in the playoffs (or in this case, won them) would pick later).

And yes, it is thoretically possible to win the playoffs and not pick last. In that case, the team who wins the most overall money picks last.

It works for us, good luck.
