Hi All,
first off, I\'m a long-time / first-timer so please be gentle, and forgive me if I posted this in the wrong forum! I belong to a relatively deep 12 team pool, where we have a 20 man team, and keep any 12 for the following season. Now that the draft and most of the FA signings have finished, I was wondering if you can help me on who to keep and who to let go. We ice 2C,2LW,2RW,1F,1W,2Util(any skater),4D, and 2G. The rest make up the bench. We have 11 categories in the league ranging from G,A,P,+/-,PIM,PPG,PPP,W,GAA,SV%, and SHO. The following is my lineup from last year (I finished dead last, but have a young team).... C Getzlaf C P. Bergeron LW Zetterberg LW,RW E. Cole -x RW, Satan -x RW, Zherdev RW, A Radulov C J. Carter C P Stastny C,RW Boyes C Brule -x C O\'Sullivan -x D Ry Whitney D Redden -x D Carle D Berard -x D Spacek -x G Leht G Biron G Toivonen -x the \"-x\" means those are the one\'s I\'m thinking of letting go. I know, I know, letting go of Redden? Cole? It\'s tough only keeping 12, but these are the one\'s I\'m thinking of... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Moreover, b/c I finished last, I get 1st overall this year, and was thinking of picking up one of the \"Johnson\'s\". But also because I have first overall, really I can protect \"13\" players, as I could just pick up one of my drops. Please help. I\'m really torn on who to drop, and depending on who to drop, who to pickup 1st overall. I don\'t think I have a winning team this year, but am hoping to be at the top the season after next Thanks for your input....sorry for the long post1 WC

Ok so you\'re clearly in re-building mode. Quite frankly I dont think you\'ll be contending in 2 years. I also dont see the point in simply dropping cole and redden. If you dont think you can hold onto them trade them either for young players, which wont necessarily help you, or for picks, which allows for a better re-stocking.
Here\'s who I\'d drop: Boyes - dont think he\'ll do much in st. louis, would rather keep o\'sullivan if i\'m re-building Berard Toivonen Spacek Satan Redden and Cole - like i said i think you should trade them rather than simply drop them, they both have value. Zherdev - stunning, I know, but I think you\'re just as well keeping Brule and O\' Sullivan, 2 good young, up and coming centers, both set to play bigger offensive roles in the very near future. That\'s my take. |

I agree with big_dl and I would definitly try to trade the bottom 3 guys in his list (Zherdev, Cole and Redden). During the early stages of the draft I would my looking at picking a goaltender.

Here\'s who I would keep:
G-Lehtonen, Biron D-Whitney, Redden, Carle F-Getzlaf, Zetterberg, Cole, Radulov, Stastny, Bergeron and Boyes Drops-Carter, Satan, Zherdev, Brule, O\'Sullivan, Spacek, Toivonen, Berard I really like a few of those guys that I\'d drop, but here\'s why: Carter/O\'Sullivan - recent signings drop them on the depth charts, therefore, it will be a couple of years before we see protectable #\'s Brule/Zherdev - Columbus. \'Nuff said. Satan, Spacek, Toivonen and Berard - I wouldn\'t lose any sleep over I just read on RotoWire that Boyes could end up centering the top line with Tkachuk and Kariya. That could translate into a decent year. Based on your categories, of which PPP is one, it would be wise to keep Bergeron. He had 38 PPP last season! Forget about the +/-, that will change with Claude Julien in BOS. I don\'t know who else would be available with the first pick, but taking Erik Johnson would be a great idea in a keeper pool. He will outscore Jack, especially early on in their careers.

I think that despite the fact that Cole still has lingering issues with his neck, he\'s a better option to outpoint Zherdev/Brule next year. The way their development has progressed, I wouldn\'t keep them around hoping that they show up in the next two years - you still want to compete in the present. Cole also provides LW/RW eligibility which is always a good thing and he should add some PIMs which your roster looks to be lacking. Unless there are some no-brainer tier 1 skaters available, it\'s probably a good idea to get another starting goalie early and then make sure you address your PIM shortage.

I would definetly keep OSully and Brule anyday over Zherdev. He is a head case (Yashin) without the results. Trading Redden is not a bad option but he is a great D and will probably be good on +/- and still has 3-4 years of solid numbers. Jef Carter will be stunted with the signing of Briere. Maybe you coudl get good return on him too.
If I had the 1st pick, I would seriously consider taking Erik Johnson - if you are rebuilding, but if you plan to win it all in the next two years, perhaps trade down and get a guy like Mueller with a later pick and grab a couple of assets to complete your roster. Your RW looked a little weak, and you could also get another G with a Carter deal.

Wow, this is why this site rules... great feedback everyone!! It\'s amazing how those that replied were more or less in agreement, and my thinking was totally out to lunch!! I guess that\'s why I\'m in last place in my league!
Where to start... 1) OK, maybe I won\'t win it all in 2 years, just want to be close to the top 2) It looks like Redden and Cole should be kept over people like Zherdev and Brule (and maybe O\'Sully). Cole\'s PIM\'s and his LW/RW eligibility is nice, I\'m just afraid of his wonky neck. Rumor has it, Carolina is going about to release the \"Eric Cole bobblehead\" :P I\'ve been hanging on to Zherdev mostly as a *pride thing* (as I drafted him real early 2 years ago). I am slowly realizing that this is unhealthy to creating a winning lineup. However, it might be nice to hang on to him b/c if Zherdev is traded (everyone knows he needs to be traded), his value should increase? But when will he be traded? 3)I\'m worried about Brule\'s 2 very serious injuries early on, and has the potential to one day become the president of the band-aid club? Moreover, O\'Sully is a bit of a head case apparently, so it\'s tough to decide on who to keep. However, I believe LA is the \"next PIT\" and it would be nice to grab as many Kings now as possible. So I guess I\'m leaning towards keeping O\'Sully now? 4) Boyes with Kariya and Tkachuck would be stellar. 5) I was devestated to see how far J Carter fell when Dobber released his July rankings! I remember last year Dobber mentioning if you can\'t get Semin or Radulov, grab Carter. But who saw Briere coming to town? He looks to play with Upshall and Hartnell, which isn\'t a horrible 2nd line? So I guess this is more thinking out loud. Any more thoughts are greatly appreciated! Modified Keeper List based on people\'s input: Getz, P Bergeron, Zetter, Cole, Radulov, Stastny, Boyes (or O\'Sully), Ry Whitney, Redden, Carle, Biron, Lehtonen. WC

I wasnt gonna reply but something in your post bothered me. It bothered so much that I\'m gonna risk losing karma points here.
First, let me say that\'s it\'s your team, so do whatever you want but I dont think Redden and Cole do much for you, given the rest of your team.I think you\'d be better off trying to acquire picks, preferably to acquire prospects. Second, nothing to be ashamed about with Zherdev, he was thought to be a cant miss prospect, and there\'s no doubt about the massive amounts of skill that he possesses. It\'s also hard to drop a guy who plays with another potential fantasy stud like Rick Nash. Third, and this is what bothered me about your post. What\'s with the misplaced question marks? There\'s something to be said for making a definitive statement. The abundance of question marks in weird places not only make your post hard to read but strip your statements of most of their credibility. To sum up, question marks are for questions; periods and exclamation marks are for statements. |

Well, I sort of agree with the majority here, however, if you can find room for Brule, I would keep him.
Of course, that depends on whether you feel if you have a shot at competing this year or not. Brule is still a year or so away from becoming a stud...
