Default My first MLB keeper

My first MLB keeper draft is next week and Im just wondering how different people's approaches are compared to a yearly league? I believe we are keeping 12 players on a 28 man roster so it's fairly big.

People will reach by a round or two, maybe three if they have a bromance, for the big up and comers like a Harper or Lawrie but aside from that it's usually the same as a regular draft.

Based on your league with keeping 12 though, might be a lot of reaching early on and people taking flyers on deep prospects by round 20. Pay attention to positional scarcity and don't over react to runs or reach out of your comfort zone. Rookies rarely pay off right away so don't go crazy on youngsters.

Try to balance your team with youth and experience that will help you win now and in the future. So many managers get caught up in having to have the next big thing and they go after players instead of championships.

That is a great point, I agree with hawkeyez52 here. Something to keep in mind is the value that players with multi-position eligibility present. I tend to like to avoid players with huge red flags, such as Alex Rodriguez or Ryan Howard, but if you feel like a player has slipped too far in your draft go ahead and make a move for him.

Something else to consider is that you want to target players who can contribute in the most categories first, I like to draft five out of six offensive players in the first six rounds. Then start to fill out your pitching a little bit, pitching is plentiful. If you draft one ace to anchor your staff, you can effectively centre your pitching around that guy and build a strong pitching staff.

I would avoid players like Curtis Granderson and Adam Dunn, because there are players that can put up similar numbers which you can get much later in your draft. The other thing you have to consider is are you going for the win this year or building a great team? I like to maintain a strong core of young players mixed with some proven talent and I find that's the recipe to winning a championship.

I don't know if he's much of a sleeper, but consider nabbing Zack Wheeler with a late pick. He's got sleeper potential up the whazoo. If any of your guys are reading ESPN they know of him potentially. He's the guy the Giants made the big trade for Carlos Beltran with. Some are comparing him to Strasburg, which even if they're wrong, means he's worth a mid-to late flyer.

Well.....here are the results...

10 team league.
R,HR,RBI,SB,Avg,OPS
QS,Era,WHIP,K/9,SV,HLD

We have an extra IF spot and 2 Util

C: J. Montero
1B: Rizzo, Craig
2B: Hill, Gyorko
3B: Wright, Alvarez
SS: Rutledge, Boegaerts
OF: Harper, Bruce, Cespedes, Markaikis, Aoki
SP: Kershaw, Latos, Shields, Kennedy, Millone, Wheeler, Teheran, Fiers, D.Hudson

It all got effed up when I drew 5th overall and Cano went 4th with Harper still on the board.....but still ecstatic I grabbed Kershaw on the way back as the FOURTH pitcher off the board.
