If Grigorenko's downside is producing like Alex Kovalev, I'll take that over a maybe Brian Gionta clone in Gallagher every day of the week. Wouldn't you?

I have never called him a Gionta clone and I didn't say that was his downside, I'm calling that his upside. Gallagher is already considerably better than Gionta was in his first three NHL seasons.

I'd wager I've seen him play more than most people on these boards and I have come away with the same bad feeling about him too many times for me to say he'll become a star with any level of confidence. Sure he put up good numbers to begin the year, but as you aptly pointed out, we should have expected nothing less from a mid 1st rounder on a very good team.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you're happy with Kovalev-esque production then you might get what you're looking for in Grigs but to suggest that he's head and shoulders above these others implies that you see him being one of the top players in the league and I'll wager against that every day of the week.
Two posts above mine, fungchen brings up the "no heart" argument against Grigorenko. If you don't like Grigo that's fine but the no heart label is used up and lazy. What about his play do people not like? Because to me he has the tools to be a superstar in the future, with his biggest asset being perhaps the most important... His brain and hockey sense.

Him being sent back to the Q is not a failure on his part, he realistically should have never played in the NHL past his 5th game this season. It's a case of the Sabres management turning more and more into a joke.

When it comes to prospects, if you really prefer the future 50 point player who could get into the 60s a few times (Gallagher) over the potential superstar (90+?) in Grigo, by all means do so. But two months ago Gallagher would have been laughed off of this list.... Is what amounts to a good 10-15 game stretch really enough to judge Gallagher more valuable than a player with twice the upside?

The funny thing is I actually agree with the 'no heart' label but I do appologize for missing the bit you pointed out.

Skill is only one part of what makes a superstar and I don't see ANY of the other pieces to his game. I feel he's following very closely in the mold of Filatov. I've written dozens of times around here what I don't like about his game and I really don't have the energy to re-hash right now....search the old threads
