Man, I'm starting to think you guys picking Gallagher are right. I hope this season isn't just a flash in the pan with a hot Montreal team. He's really racking up SOG/PIM and now getting PP time though.
Grigorenko definitely seems like a boom/bust prospect. If he does break out I think it will take him a few years. He's got a long way to go to excel in the NHL. He definitely seems like he isn't very noticeable at this point but things can change with a summer of conditioning and improvement in speed. I asked the same question at HFBoards and everyone ranked Gallagher the lowest. Interesting to see it the other way around here.

We can talk about Gallagher's play and compare him to Gionta as much as we want, but if we're ranking these guys its ALL about UPSIDE.
Grigorenko Silfverberg Gallagher

Skill is wonderful, and the most important attribute when considering a player a super star, but without heart, it is often wasted. Put Alex Semin and Jonathan Toews in a rink by themselves, toss out a puck and have them play a meaningless game and Semin will probably win and wow you in the process. But who would you choose as a player in both real life and fantasy?

The argument that Grigorenko has no heart seems tired and lazy to me. He played through ankle and foot injuries last season, plus mono. I don't know how many of you have had mono before but it's terrible.... I couldn't even get out of bed for a week, let alone play in a Quebec league playoff series, and my case was fairly minor. It's not unheard of for people to be bedridden for a month with mono. The fact he gritted through and played showed a lot to me.
He then went on to dominate the Q this year... It's to be expected from a high pick in his post draft year, but he did it which many players can't say they did. He was his teams best player at the WJC and led his team to a medal, and he made the NHL as an 18 year old. What more does he have to do to get rid of the "no heart" moniker? Win a Stanley Cup by himself? More likely he just needed to not be born in Russia. I take Grigorenko every single time from these 3 players... He is head and shoulders above the other two.

I completely agree with the above statement. As far as I'm concerned this is not even close. If Grig's passport was from any other nation we would not be having this conversation about his heart. I would be willing to bet at the end of there careers his PPG is .25 higher then either of these guys.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you're happy with Kovalev-esque production then you might get what you're looking for in Grigs but to suggest that he's head and shoulders above these others implies that you see him being one of the top players in the league and I'll wager against that every day of the week. |
