So if only three teams in a given division make the playoffs, who and what will determine which team will be the fourth team to make the first two rounds of the playoffs divisional?

Will one of the five teams in the opposing division, "crossover" into the other division to become the fourth or missing team? Then, if that "crossover" team ends up winning the first two rounds, will they be crowned champions of the division they "crossed over" into?...even though they belong in the other division.
Reading the article it could be even more bizarre than that:

"The two fourth seeds would be made up of the wild-card teams. The top division winner based on regular-season points in the standings would face off against the lower-ranked wild-card team. The other division winner would play the higher-ranked wild-card."

Therefore, you could have 4 teams from each division make it and have the 2 wildcard teams cross-over in the first round (each out of division), if those cross-over teams won the division they crossed into you could end up with 2 (or 4) teams winning a division they were not a part of.

Example: Chicago wins the Mid-West and 1st in the Western Conference (1 seed), Vancouver wins the Pacific(2 seed). Nashville finishes 7th out of 14 in the West and LA finishes 8th. Under the wording above LA (8) cross-over to play Chicago (1) and Nashville (7) plays Vancouver (2). If both upset twice LA would win the Mid-West and Nashville the Pacific, these 2 would now play for the Western Conference Championship. Bizarre.

I suspect they add a rule that if 4 teams per division make it they go by division and not wildcard spots.

i would prefer if they just stuck with conference playoffs and keep 15 teams on each side.

Am I the only one who is pissed off that Florida is completely getting screwed here? Come on guys, Florida is not in the North! I'll fix it. Move NYR and NYI to the North. BOOM! Problem solved. Only team getting screwed then is NJD and they still have Philly and Pitt as rivals so big deal. But this realignment is just not fair to the FLA teams.

yup the florida teams do not belong in the north

either the two NY teams or Pitt and Cls are the teams that should end up in the north imo

This works nicely for the FLA teams. They fill their seats when the likes of Leafs, Canadiens and Red Wings are playing there a lot more. There's a lot of fans of those O6-teams living in Florida. They'll bring their $$$ right to the pockets of FLA-teams.

Moving NYR and NYI to the North would break them from NJD. Now that would make no sense! And you simply can't break the PIT-PHI rivalry. Nor PHI-NYR rivalry. FLA-teams with in the North is the only way this works.

Everything Carcillo is saying here makes perfect sense. The whole Atlantic Division has become inseparable unlike any other in the league.

Not the greatest news for Leaf fans, but I for one am really looking forward to seeing the Wings come to town more often
