Today, the NHL sent a note to all 30 teams to explain how it sees realgnment:
-2 associations, 2 divisions per association East: Central division (Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Buffalo, Ottawa, Florida TB, Detroit) Atlantic division (Carolina, Columbus, NJ, Washington, NYR, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, NYI) West Midwest division (Chicago, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg) Pacific division (Anaheim, Calgary, Edmonton, LA, Phoenix, SJ, Vancouver) Top three teams of each division qualify for the playoffs. The remaining top two teams in the association also qualify. First two rounds of the playoffs within division, then the third one in the association. Home-and-home against each team of the other association.

The new divisions make sense with Winnipeg getting a logical home (although no Canadian rivals). Also Detroit must love this new setup against all these marquee teams and Columbus finally shifts East. I think they realized they needed some balance to making the playoffs between the 7 and 8 team divisions and that's where the wildcard compromise comes in, a good idea IMO given the varying sizes of the conferences.
Finally I hate the name "associations". Why not stay with 2 conferences and 4 divisions? Associations reminds me of the "Legends" and "Leaders" names used in college's Big 10 conference, sounds lame.

TSN Story:

The Western teams would then play 32 games (16x2) against the Eastern teams. The Eastern teams would then play 28 games (14x2) against the Western teams. I wonder how they'd even this out. And could that lead to a different amount of games (80? 84?) Maybe the Western teams play a 6x5 + 7x3 + 16x2 = 83 games. Maybe the Eastern teams play a 7x5 + 8x(2.5) + 14x2 = 83 games. |

meh , not a big fan of uneven division / conference sizes .
would prefer a simple swap of Nashville into the current southeast div & Jets into the midwest. |

Article says that the first two rounds of the playoffs will be divisional yet by the way the playoff qualifying system works, it is possible for five teams from one division and three teams from the other to make up the eight playoff team in an association.
So if only three teams in a given division make the playoffs, who and what will determine which team will be the fourth team to make the first two rounds of the playoffs divisional? Will one of the five teams in the opposing division, "crossover" into the other division to become the fourth or missing team? Then, if that "crossover" team ends up winning the first two rounds, will they be crowned champions of the division they "crossed over" into?...even though they belong in the other division. |
