Default Potential Trade ?

Was just reading that Colorado is looking for a offensive defenseman for O'Reily.
How about Gardiner ?

Yannick Weber from the Habs along with Ryan White could be the answer too. I heard some buzz lately regarding O'Reilly and Montreal.

Gardiner is not a bad option either...

Ryan O'Reilly will cost a hell of a lot more than Yannick Weber and Ryan White.

If you believe the stories that are floating out there, Colorado is looking for a kings ransom for O'Reilly. Funny, they wont pay him as if he's worth a kings ransom but that appears to be their asking price for him.

Either way, since this is no longer Burkes team, anythings possible as far as Gardiner goes I guess. They wouldnt trade Gardiner for pretty much anyone last year (CBJ had him as a "must include" in the Nash talks) so its hard to see them moving him now for O'Reilly, but as I stated, this isnt Burkes team anymore.

The problem is, Gardiner alone wont cut it. They are said to be asking for a top 6 fwd or top pairing Dman along with a quality prospect and a pick for O'Reilly (again, if you believe everything you read out there on twitter land and other writers ramblings).

The worst part is, the more teams that jump in on O'Reilly, the more likely they are to get this for him.

Its going to be interesting but in my mind, some GM out there is about to be fleeced by Colorado GM Greg Sherman. Dont get me wrong, O'Reilly is a very good forward, but hasnt done enough to warrant that kind of return (or the kind of money he wants in a contract for that matter) but thats just my opinion.

The whole O'Reilly situation baffles me. What has he done to deserve that type of money or fetch that kind of return in a trade? I don't know much about him, but from what I can tell he's had one 55-point season after two where he scored in the 20's, and he wasn't a great scorer in junior. I realize that he may have a solid defensive game, but still, a top-6 forward, a prospect and a pick for a two-way center who has one 50-point season to his credit? No thanks, go back to the K.

Furthermore, what has he done to make people think he deserves that kind of money? His third year he got 56 points!! Big deal. Now he is pulling a Subban and looking for what?...5-6 mill a year? Give me a break. Get 65 points next year and 70 the year after then maybe you can look into 5 mill a year, but Jamie Benn he is not.

Doughty was a Norris finalist in his 2nd season and scored 59 points that year.

In O'Reilly's case he's clearly not worth a long contract at 5m/year at the moment. Lots of teams offer short bridge contracts after ELC and that's the right approach in my opinion. You have to earn the bucks. ROR apparently doesn't agree with that.
