I've seen probably 50% of the episodes but haven't watched them sequentially...

Yeah JJ's been gone since one of the early episodes in this season. Was a real bummer...
From what I've gathered, the producers had decided to get rid of JJ and Prentiss since before the season started. They planned on cutting JJ from the very beginning of the season, and getting rid of Prentiss later in the season (which they did).
Apparently when they cut JJ the show received a lot of bad press (rightfully so) and decided to offer Paget another full season to try to avoid any more bad rep. Obviously Paget said forget that and signed onto a new comedy pilot.

What cheeses me the most about this whole situation is these cast cuts were made because they had to pay for the A-list actors for Suspect Behaviour. That show is absolute garbage compared to Criminal Minds. I knew when they did that spinoff episode that this was going down a really bad path.
