I would compare him to Dion Phaneuf, if anybody.
I'm sure he would take a Phaneuf type contract, 6.5m/year I believe is the cap hit on that one.

Hall is a 1st overall pick and Eberle went point per game and over 30 goals.

Subban doesn't have the pedigree, stats, or hardware to put himself in the same league as the Tavares, Stamkos, Eberle, Hall, Skinner, Seguin, Karlsson, Doughty etc...

And of course I'd rather have Subban than Myers. But who would have taken Subban now over Myers after his rookie season? That's what I'm saying.

You can't compare cap hits for the sake of comparing them. You have to compare the circumstances that the contracts were given out on.

In no way does he have the credentials to command that kind of salary on his 2nd contract!

He's definitely more in the range of:

Carlson, 4
Hedman, 4
Staal, 4
Del Zotto, 2.5

You could make an argument that his value is higher than the above guys so lets say 4-4.5.

But to go out and publicly say you're worth more than 5 mill and refuse to negotiate like the rest of the core of your team (Price Gorges Pacio) is downright greedy.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE PK. But if this is how the negotiation is going to go, making a good trade is a logical solution. Unfortunately there isn't a young stud Dman available out there so a young stud forward will have to do.
Bang on. Subban and/or his agent are doing what's only human, which is to try to get the most they can. They know they hold some good cards and are playing to maximize their value. I'd be real unhappy with Subban if I were a Habs fan.

you can't compare Subban to Phaneuf. When Phaneuf signed his deal, these were his stats:

2005-06 Calgary Flames NHL 82 20 29 49
2006-07 Calgary Flames NHL 79 17 33 50
2007-08 Calgary Flames NHL 82 17 43 60

he was one of the best young stars in the league.

Agents and players don't give a damn about comparing circumstances when contracts were given out. They will use whatever tactic they can to get a better deal.

All of those elite players you listed make more than 5m/year, no one is trying to compare Subban to them. I've compared Subban to Myers, MDZ etc, only in response to 'habs83' post bringing them into the discussion in the first place.

Luff made the comparison, and maybe it's fair.

Phaneuf got 6.5m/year in 2009, and Subban is asking for less at 5m/year today.

Agents and players can say whatever they want. The contract is coming from the team. PK is an RFA. He can't just walk away and play somewhere else in the league.

If PK was a year away from being a UFA this would be a completely different negotiation. Then you'd be looking at what he could get on the open market which would be A LOT.

When a team's fans are chanting "PK PK PK" at the end of a terrible performance, the player has some leverage, more than that of a typical RFA.

I hear what you're saying, but this is a high profile RFA in a high profile market, and that works to Subban's advantage.

The Canadiens can't just sit on their hands here, especially if the team starts losing or if Markov gets hurt.
