That's a paper of Hakan Anderson named Finding the next top talent. He is the Detroit Chief of European scouting, this is a nice paper. I liked the holmstrom part and Datsyuk as well.

I love how Detroit always gets to live in the past so much. The team hasn't drafted any "gem" since Franzen for the most part, and they are on the serious decline because of it. Their drafting in the last 10 years has been average.

Ahahahha yeah, they did just good with Smith, Nyquist and other prospect. Drafting past 10 year, never better the 20th( or close), I imagine it's hard to find the gem then other GM past over ?

I'd put it at slightly above average, considering how full their cupboard is right now. If you asked me three years ago I would have said it looked pretty bleak. And I don't really give them Franzen. He was drafted as an already-developed 26-year-old.

Agreed. Average or slightly above is where I'd rank them over the past 10 years. Part of the problem is that they haven't had many/any high picks but the idea that they've been able to consistently mine diamonds out of the later rounds is a carry-over from some of the work that was done in the late 90's early 2000's. A few years ago I posted a breakdown of their drafts over the past 10 years and came to the same conclusion....average. Dig it up if you're so inclined.
