I think we need to know how many players you start at forward and how many you start at defence.

Buff looks like he garners approximately 60-75 points, where Ryan probably gets 70-85 (purely points, not looking at powerplay or other.)

The question is how much of an upgrade is Ryan over the best waiver forward, and how good is Buff over the best waiver defense.

My guess is Buff provides the greater difference, meaning keep Buff, but this is dependent on how many forward and defense you start.

So you take best 3d, and best 9f, then drop the 8 lowest playesr. So let's base this on each team rostering 5d and 15f then. So you're looking at 50d and 150f rostered in the league.

Figure out how many points Buff, Ryan and Coture got last year, or averaged over the past 2 full seasons, and compare that to the average points recieved by the 51st D and 151st F. The bigger difference is who you should keep. I suspect Buff will be the more valuable player, because the 51st D won't provide near the number of points Buff will.

Let me know if that makes sense.

Rough calcs for last year give me this.

Ryan: 73
Buff: 88
Couture: 98

51st D: 49
151st F: 52

So it's a tough decision and you can pretty much base it purely on players as the 51st D and 151st F seem to be about equal.

Based solely on last year, you go with Couture. However, 2 years ago Buff gave you 103 points vs 83 for Ryan and 78 for Couture, so Buff might be the better play.

There is also more variation at the 151st F point totals, so it might be easier to find a forward that gets more than 52 points at that spot. That being the case and Buff's potential, I keep Byfuglien.

Besides the break down, you're stocked at the forwwrd position. Your defensemen start looking a little rough without Buff. Keep Dustin.
